The Oakland University baseball team will open up the 2001 season in a three-game series versus Georgia State starting Saturday, February 24. The Golden Grizzlies then travel to Atlanta to face #2 Georgia Tech on Tuesday, February 27. OU will play a two-game series with the Yellow Jackets before heading to Macon to face Mercer University in a four-game set beginning Friday, March 2. Oakland has never faced Georgia State and Mercer. The Grizzlies trail the Yellow Jackets 0-3 in the three previous meetings. OU's righthanded pitcher
Justin Robertson (Lapeer/West) will get the nod in the opener. Robertson went 5-3 with an ERA of 5.96. The senior struck out 34 hitters in 48.1 innings pitched. Oakland returns its whole starting outfield in 2001. Seniors
Casey Caid (Three Oaks/Three Oaks River),
Kip Harris (Midland/Dow) and junior
Nick DiPonio (Highland/Orchard Lake St. Mary's) will handle the duties in the outfield. The three combined for a .358 batting average, 217 hits, 52 doubles, 128 RBI and 26 home runs. The first game against Georgia State will start at 2 p.m.
