Golden Grizzlies Gear Up for Weekend Showdown: Oakland Faces Dayton and Miami (OH)

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland women's tennis team travels to Ohio for another set of weekend matches, taking on Dayton and Miami (OH) on February 7 and 8.

The Golden Grizzlies (1-2) split their in-state outing last weekend, defeating Northwood (0-1) before falling to Eastern Michigan (6-0). Freshman Oliwia Klimas was named Horizon League Singles Player of the Week after going undefeated at No. 3 singles and winning both of her matches in straight sets. Every Oakland player earned at least one point across the two contests, with Klimas leading the way at 2-0.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton (0-4) enters the fourth week of its winter season, still in search of its first victory. In their most recent match on Jan. 30, the Flyers fell 7-0 to Bowling Green. Before that, they visited Toledo the day after Oakland faced the Rockets, dropping a 5-1 decision compared to the Golden Grizzlies' 5-2 loss.

During the fall season, Dayton and Oakland met at the Rocket Indoor Invitational, hosted by Toledo. Against the Flyers, Oakland went 2-1 in doubles and 4-2 in singles, with tight competition in two doubles matches and on courts No. 1-4 in singles.

Overall, Dayton is 3-0 against Oakland, most recently winning a dual match in 2025 at its home court, the South Regency Tennis Center. In that 4-3 loss, Edie Hammond and Martyna Piechowicz earned singles victories, each needing a third set to clinch their matches.

SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
Miami (OH) is also searching for its first win of the winter season after facing several Power Four programs, including Kentucky, Illinois, and Colorado. The RedHawks' western road trip last weekend resulted in a 6-1 loss to Colorado and a 7-0 defeat to Denver.

While Oakland takes on Dayton on Feb. 7, Miami (OH) will face Horizon League competitor Cleveland State, giving the Golden Grizzlies a preview of the level of competition they can expect the following day.

This will be the second all-time meeting between Oakland and Miami (OH), with the first coming in the 2022-23 season. The RedHawks claimed a 6-1 win over the Black and Gold. Although senior Tara Montreuil was on the Oakland roster at the time, no athlete on either roster has faced one another in dual play during the regular season.
