Fields Jr. Posts Double-Double, Oakland Dominates Offensive Glass in Loss at No. 16 Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Oakland (0-1, 0-0 HL) lost to No. 16 Michigan (1-0, 0-0 B1G), 84-68, on Monday afternoon at Crisler Center. Oakland pulled down 21 offensive rebounds and held a 44-42 rebounding edge, turning those chances into 17 second-chance points. Oakland was limited to five assists and committed 15 turnovers, while the Wolverines finished with 17 assists and a 48-24 advantage in points in the paint.

"We out-rebounded the defending national champions in their house and had 21 offensive rebounds, that's something to like," said head coach Greg Kampe. "We had guys out there playing against Michigan in their first Division I game... they came up and were physical with those guys. We shot more free throws than they shot. We did that, at Michigan."

Senior Chris Fields Jr. scored 18 points, went 8-for-12 at the free-throw line and collected 10 rebounds for his first Golden Grizzly double-double. Junior Nassim Mashhour finished with 16 points, including two 3-pointers, and converted all four free throws as sophomore Ryder Bradley added 12 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Oakland used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to turn a 13-8 deficit into an 18-13 lead, but the Wolverines recovered and carried a 47-36 lead into halftime. Earlier, Mashhour answered the Wolverines' opening free throws with a 3-pointer off an assist from junior Warren Marshall IV at 19:19, then scored again on a layup that put Oakland ahead 5-4 at 18:30. The burst opened with Ryder Bradley's 3-pointer, included Bradley's steal and three Fields Jr. free throws, and ended with a Mashhour jumper and Bradley layup. The Wolverines moved back in front with a transition layup at 9:16 and built a 29-19 lead before Fields converted a layup and free throw with 5:53 left. Oakland shot 5-for-11 from 3-point range and 7-for-9 at the foul line, but the Wolverines held a 32-10 edge in paint points and scored the final seven points after Fields' layup made it 40-36 with 2:09 remaining.

Oakland's main second-half response came midway through the half, when it held the Wolverines scoreless during an 8-0 run from 10:02 to 8:34 that cut the deficit from 62-47 to 62-55. Earlier, Fields Jr. scored inside to start Oakland's half, Bradley turned a steal and offensive rebound into a layup, and sophomore Hamoudy Mashhour's putback brought Oakland within 49-43 at 15:53. The Wolverines pushed ahead 62-47, but Oakland's work on the glass kept possessions alive throughout the half, as it collected 16 offensive rebounds and finished with a 30-23 rebounding edge in the segment. After Warren Marshall IV's jumper closed the run, the Wolverines answered at the line and off turnovers to move ahead 71-55, while Oakland added late points from seniors William Kassi, Belal El Shakery, Fields Jr., RJ Taylor and N. Mashhour. Oakland shot 8-for-36 and 1-for-15 from 3-point range in the half, and the Wolverines closed out an 84-68 final.

Kicking off a long road trip stretch, Oakland travels out west to face Stanford on Friday, Nov. 6, before a quick turnaround to UC Santa Barbara Saturday, Nov. 7.
