PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Oakland Golden Grizzlies (0-2, 0-0) fell to Stanford (2-0, 0-0 ACC) 81-63 on Friday night inside Maples Pavilion to kick off a two-game stretch on the West Coast. Oakland was within 38-33 at halftime before the Cardinal outscored it 43-30 in the second half. Oakland finished with 34 points in the paint and 20 from its bench, but shot 3-for-17 from three-point range and had four assists.
"I'm highly disappointed in how we closed the game. Again, it came down to shooting," said head coach
Greg Kampe. "If we don't make shots, it's going to be a long year. It's a quick turnaround to tomorrow, but I'll tell you something: we are going to learn a lot about ourselves tomorrow."
Senior
Chris Fields Jr. scored 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting and added six rebounds and two steals as senior
William Kassi finished with 11 points, six rebounds and a block. Junior
Nassim Mashhour added nine points, two rebounds and a steal.
Oakland moved in front twice in the opening five minutes, with Fields Jr. scoring a layup for a 6-5 lead at 17:00 and adding a jumper for an 8-7 edge at 15:39 before senior
Belal El Shakery's layup and free throw made it 11-7. The Cardinal answered with a 10-2 stretch built partly on second-chance scoring to go ahead 17-13, but Oakland came back when Fields Jr. turned a steal into a fast-break layup that tied the half at 17-17 with 9:51 left. The Cardinal followed with 12 of the next three points to put Oakland behind 29-20, though senior
RJ Taylor's 3-pointer, free throws from Fields Jr. and Mashhour, and a late Mashhour three kept Oakland within reach. Oakland went 7-for-7 at the line and forced seven Cardinal turnovers, but the Cardinal held a 23-16 rebounding edge and led 38-33 at halftime.
Oakland stayed within one possession early in the second half, with Kassi scoring the first Oakland basket and later converting two free throws to make it 43-41 with 16:56 left. The Cardinal answered with four 3-pointers by the 9:29 mark and built a 62-49 advantage, while Oakland countered with baskets from El Shakery, sophomores
Hamoudy Mashhour and
Ryder Bradley during that stretch. Fields Jr. gave Oakland its main late production, making four field goals and three free throws from 8:38 to 4:41, including two second-chance baskets that moved Oakland to 61 points against the Cardinal's 70. Oakland shot 10-for-19 in the half but went 1-for-9 from 3-point range, 9-for-18 at the free-throw line and committed eight turnovers, and the Cardinal closed out an 81-63 final.
A quick turnaround to head down the California coast, Oakland heads to Santa Barbara to face the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on tomorrow, Nov. 7, 2026, at 4 p.m ET. The game is available to stream on ESPN+.
