ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland Golden Grizzlies are back for a weekend homestand inside the OU Credit Union O'rena, kicking off with a tilt against Cleveland State on Friday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. ET.
Oakland picked up a big win over the defending HL Champions, Robert Morris, 96-73, on the Blacktop on Sunday.
Junior Isaac Garrett led Oakland with a career-high total of 30 points, converting all 16 of his free throw attempts, for third-best in Oakland program history, and adding in three steals. His 30 from the floor marks the first Oakland player to shoot 30 points in a regular-season game since Trey Townsend in 2024. Fifth-year Tuburu Naivalurua contributed significantly with 21 points, tying for his season-high on 9-for-11 shooting, while also recording a block and six rebounds as fifth-year Michael Houge posted 11 points and secured seven rebounds, complementing his performance with two steals. Senior Brody Robinson jumped back into double-digit shooting with 11 points, making all eight of his free throws and dishing out five assists, marking the second consecutive game he recorded five or more assists.
On Monday, Garrett was named the Under Armour Horizon League Player of the Week for the first time in his career. Garrett led the Golden Grizzlies to a 2-1 record over the week in Horizon League action, picking up big wins over Youngstown State and defending Horizon League Champion, Robert Morris. The Pleasant Grove, Utah native hit career-highs, scoring 27 points against the Penguins and hit 30 points against the Colonials at home. The 6-8 forward earned his third double-double of the season in Youngstown, along with the 27 points, picking up a season-high 14 rebounds off the glass. He earned his way into the Oakland record book, going 16-for-16 from the line, now the third-most free-throw attempts with 100% accuracy.
Tip-off in Rochester will be available to stream on ESPN+ with The "Voice of the Golden Grizzlies", Neal Ruhl (PxP) and Darryl Jacobs (Color) on the call. They both will also be on the radio call on 97.1HD-3/1270am or the Audacy App online.
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
Voted to finish the league in eighth place, Cleveland State is 1-3 in Horizon League games, led by new head coach Rob Summers. The Vikings picked up the lone HL victory with some help from Dayan Nessah putting up 23 points and Josiah Harris collecting 10 boards on the other side of the ball. Nessah, along with senior Tre Beard are in the league's top-20 in points/game to lead the team.
The Golden Grizzlies lead the all-time series with the Vikings at 17-14. Oakland took care of the team from Cleveland in a 91-86 overtime victory last February and are looking for the first back-to-back W's against the Vikings since 2024.
