ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland University women's tennis team returns to action this weekend, opening their winter season on the road against Toledo. First-serve of regular-season play is set for 1 P.M. (EST) at the Twos Athletic Club.
The Golden Grizzlies are coming off one of their most successful fall campaigns to date. Highlights included Martyna Piechowicz capturing the Horizon League Singles Championship, Edie Hammond going undefeated in tournament play at the Rocket Indoor Invitational, and the program earning its first-ever No. 1 ranking in the #HLTEN Preseason Poll.
Oakland returns five letterwinners from last season and welcomes two freshman for the 2025-26 campaign. Athletes to watch include Nisa Bulut, the 2024-25 Horizon League Freshman of the Year and an All-League First Team selection, and Emilia Jarvinen, the 2023-24 Horizon League Freshman of the Year and a 2024-25 All-League Second-Team honoree.
SCOUTING THE ROCKETS
In their most recent meeting at the Rocket Indoor Invitational, the Black and Gold swept the Rockets in doubles play, winning all three pairings. Toledo, however, controlled singles, limiting Oakland to a 1-5 mark. Overall, the Rockets edged the Golden Grizzlies, 5-4.
Toledo was picked to finish first in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Preseason Coaches Poll. The Rockets return six letterwinners and add three freshmen for the upcoming season.
A key returner for Toledo is JJ Scholten. Last season, Scholten was named MAC Freshman of the Year, earned All-MAC First Team honors, and claimed the women's singles title at the MAC Individual Singles Championships in October, earning a spot in the ITA Conference Masters Championships.
Both teams will look to make a statement this season after falling in their respective conference championships last year.
