Women's Basketball Scores Second Straight Win in Electric Metro Series Victory

DETROIT, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies earned their second straight victory, defeating Detroit Mercy 80-70 at Calihan Hall, securing the victory with a 26-point fourth quarter. Oakland outpaced and outclassed capitalized on the fast break, outscoring the Titans 17-2 in transition.

Oakland opened the game by asserting an early lead, with Angie Smith scoring a layup just 13 seconds into play. Makenzie Luehring contributed significantly with a jumper and a three-pointer, helping Oakland maintain their advantage. A key moment came when Filippa Goula assisted Jasmine "Jazzy" Dupree-Hebert's three-pointer, pushing Oakland ahead at the 7:00 mark. Dupree-Hebert's performance was notable as she scored a season-high 10 points.

The Golden Grizzlies closed out the quarter with a 7-0 run, capped off by a Layla Gold coast -to-coast layup to give Oakland a 16-9 lead with 2:52 left in the period. Despite UDM's attempts to close the gap, including a late layup by Makayla Jackson at the buzzer, Oakland finished the first quarter ahead, leading 20–18.

Oakland managed to maintain momentum in the second quarter with pivotal plays from Luehring, who opened with a 3-pointer at 9:37 along with a block, countering an early Titans offensive attempt. Despite UDM tying the score multiple times and going on a 7-2 run, Oakland responded with a critical layup by Layla Gold at 6:46, keeping them ahead. Gold's contribution was part of her third double-double of the season.

Later in the quarter, Dupree-Hebert hit a key 3-pointer at 5:46, assisted by Goula, pushing Oakland's lead further. The Titans continued to press, closing the gap to within two points, but an and one from Luehring at 1:54 secured a small cushion. The quarter ended tied at 37, setting the stage for the final half.

Oakland focused on attacking in space, isolating Detroit's bigs and taking advantage of mismatches on the Golden Grizzlies' guards. Luehring led the scoring charge in the opening 20 minutes with 16 points, helping Oakland go 4-for-8 from three and 9-for-11 from the field in the half.

Oakland surged ahead in the third quarter with a strong offensive push, highlighted by another Luehring's three-pointer at 8:22, extending their lead to 42-37. Gold added another bucket at 7:53, and Lianna Baxter added a three-pointer at 7:10, pushing the score to 47-39.

Key defensive plays from Oakland, including a steal by Gold at 5:58, further solidified Oakland's lead. The quarter ended with Oakland ahead, leading 54-50.

Oakland surged ahead in the fourth quarter, with their highest scoring frame of the game, starting with a decisive layup by Baxter at 9:33 to extend their lead. Sereniti Roberts-Adams added to the momentum with consecutive layups, the latter assisted by Luehring, pushing the lead further. Gold contributed significantly with a layup and a free throw at 7:23, increasing the visitor's advantage to 63-54.

Dupree-Hebert hit a crucial 3-pointer at 5:27, widening Oakland's lead to 68-57. The Golden Grizzlies held onto the lead, securing an 80-70 victory over the Titans, closing the quarter with a 26-20 score advantage.

Luehring led the team with a career-high 25 points, converting 8-of-14 field goals and 6-of-7 free throws, while also contributing with four assists. Gold recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points and collecting 10 rebounds, in her third double-double performance of the season. Dupree-Hebert scored 10 points, with all three of her field goals made from beyond the arc. Goula added 12 points and dished out five assists, making all six of her free throw attempts. Notably, this marked the second consecutive game where Goula recorded double-digit points.

Looking ahead, Oakland will travel to face Green Bay on Thursday, Jan. 22. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
