Men's Soccer Unable to Outscore No. 3 Buckeyes in Close Match

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Oakland fell 1-0 to Ohio State on Thursday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, playing a tightly-contested match with the number three team in the nation.
The first half saw Oakland's defense, led by goalkeeper Sebastian Stanaj, withstand early pressure from Ohio State, with Stanaj making key saves in the 4th and 6th minutes to keep the game scoreless. Despite the offensive efforts from the Buckeyes, including multiple shots from Will Arnesen, Oakland maintained a clean sheet. Christopher Jean Léger nearly put Oakland on the board in the 21st minute, but it was saved by Ohio State's goalkeeper, Max Trejo, ultimately leaving the half tied at 0-0.
The second half commenced with more Oakland pressure as Marco Mazzei attempted a shot at the 53-minute mark, followed quickly by Andriy Bilous taking another shot, and nearly striking gold, on a corner kick set.
The score would finally break in the 54th minute as Ohio State responded with a goal from Arnesen to take a 1-0 lead. Despite continuing to apply pressure, putting out five shots on the night, the Golden Grizzlies weren't able to find the back of the net, falling in the match.
Stanaj anchored the Oakland defense with four saves across 90 minutes, facing 19 shots and allowing just a single goal. Léger contributed offensively, recording one shot and one shot on goal. Mazzei and Malik Sylvester each added to the attack with Mazzei taking one shot and Sylvester registering one shot on goal. Bilous was active offensively, leading the team with two shots.
Looking ahead, Oakland continues their time at the Wolstein Classic, facing the University of Dayton on Sunday, August 31 at 4 p.m.
