COLUMBUS, Ohio — Oakland and the University of Dayton played to a 1-1 draw at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Sunday as they closed out their time at the Wolstein Classic, with both teams scoring in the second half.
The first half saw a strategic defensive play from both teams, with Oakland's Cole Thompson making crucial saves, including one against the Flyers' Dren Dobruna in the 21st minute. Oakland's Abdul Al-Rashed and Andriy Bilous each took shots, with Al-Rashed's attempt saved early on.
The first half ended in a scoreless draw, with Oakland leading in saves (2 to 1) and corner kicks (3 to 2), while Dayton held a slight advantage in shots (5 to 3).
Dayton would take a lead in the 64th minute as Cooper Ljewski snuck a shot past Thompson, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Oakland found its offensive rhythm later in the half, with Marco Mazzei scoring the equalizer and his team-best second goal of the season in the 75th minute to tie the game at a goal apiece.
Despite several attempts by Al-Rashed and Christopher Jean Leger both added shots on goal to the team's tally in the second half, including a near game-winner by Al-Rashed in the 85th minute that was overturned and called offsides.
Thompson stood out as the goalkeeper for Oakland, recording a career-high seven saves in a full 90 minutes played. Mazzei contributed to the offense with one goal on three shots, all of which were on target. Al-Rashed led the team in shot attempts with four, three of which were on goal.
The match was an offensive onslaught anchored by strong goalkeeper play, as Oakland tallied 11 shots, seven on goal, while Dayton marked 17 shots, eight on goal.
