Baseball Walks It Off in Opener; Can't Score Wins in Final Two in Series Against PFW

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies hosted another close-knit series against the Purdue Fort Wayne (PFW) Mastodons, as Oakland earned a win in the series opener, but fell in the final pair of games over the weekend.

GAME 1 | FRIDAY, MAY 2 | 3 PM

The Golden Grizzlies took game one in dramatic fashion, using a bottom of the ninth rally to earn a 6-5 win.

PFW began the scoring in the top of the ninth as Justin Osterhouse sent a two run homer over the right field fence to give the Mastodons an early lead.

Oakland knotted the game back up in the bottom of the second as Carter Hain brought around a run on a single. Boston Halloran followed up with a sac fly to tie the game at two runs each before the end of the inning.

After PFW tacked on three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the Golden Grizzlies turned up the heat, scoring four unanswered runs.

It would start in the seventh inning with a Trent Rice RBI sac fly. Rice would also kick off the ninth inning rally with a RBI double. Matt McGann came up with a clutch hit, tying the game at five with a RBI single, setting up John Lauinger for his second walk-off hit in the last ten days, clocking a game-winning single up the right side of the infield.

Lauinger would finish with two hits (2-for-4) and an RBI. Rice (1-for-3) earned two RBI and a stolen base in the effort.

GAME 2 | SATURDAY, MAY 3 | 2 PM

Oakland's bats chilled off in game two of the series, scoring just two runs as they fell 5-2.

After PFW broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning as a Sage Adams grounder scored a run, the Golden Grizzlies would never take a lead.

Oakland's runs would come on a Hain grounder in the second inning and a perfectly laid bunt base hit by Ben Clark in the third.

Despite the loss, Grant Garman had a solid outing for the Golden Grizzlies, tossing seven innings and striking out six batters.

The Mastodons outhit Oakland 10 to seven, with four hitters tallying two hits.

GAME 3 | SUNDAY, MAY 4 | 10 AM

The teams were back on the diamond early for the season finale, and turned out another nail-biter as Purdue Fort Wayne outlasted Oakland 6-7 in 12 innings.

The teams scored in bunches in this one, as Oakland jumped out to a 5-0 lead as the first run scored on a wild pitch in the first, a pair of runs scored on grounders in the third inning, and Lauinger knocked an RBI single to center field in the fifth inning as Oakland held command.

PFW responded in the sixth with a five run inning, with RBI singles by Adams and Kevin Hall highlighting the comeback.

The game would stay knotted deep into extra innings when the Mastodons struck with two RBI singles, one from Osterhouse and another from Colton Shirley, as they took a 7-5 lead.

Down to three outs to tie or take the lead, Lauinger singled to right field, bringing around Matt McGann who previously tripled, to make it a 6-7 game. The Mastodons would close out Oakland's rally effort with a couple of defensive plays in the outfield, snagging a series win.

Aidan Schuck (3-for-5) and Lauinger (3-for-5, 4 RBI) tallied the best marks at the plate as Lauinger set a season high in RBIs.

The Golden Grizzlies hit the road next for their final road series of the season, taking on Youngstown State beginning on Friday, May 9.
