Baseball Routs Penguins in Series Opener; Can't Snag Wins in Final Pair of Road Games

YOUNGSTOWN, Oh, - The Golden Grizzlies couldn't keep course after a blowout victory to start their series against Youngstown State (YSU) Penguins, falling two games to one in their final road series of the season.

GAME 1

The Golden Grizzlies opened the series by delivering one of its most complete performances of the season, rolling past Youngstown State 13-3 in a seven-inning, run-rule victory.

The Golden Grizzlies exploded for 13 runs on 13 hits, scoring in six of seven innings and capitalizing on six errors by the Penguins.

Oakland's offense was led by senior outfielder John Lauinger, who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, a triple, five RBIs, and four runs scored. Lauinger reached base in all five plate appearances, adding two hit-by-pitches to his stat line.

On the mound, senior right-hander Hunter Pidek earned the win with a complete-game effort, going 7.0 innings while allowing just three runs on three hits. He struck out five and walked four on 112 pitches, settling in after a three-run first inning to shut out the Penguins the rest of the way.

Oakland got on the board with a run on a fielder's choice in the second inning to trim the early deficit to 3-1. In the very next inning the Golden Grizzlies erupted for four runs, highlighted by Lauinger's three-run triple, where he himself scored on an error, giving Oakland a 5-3 lead.

Three more runs came across in the fourth for Oakland after an RBI single from Brandon Nigh and a two-run homer from Lauinger to extend the advantage to 8-3.

The fifth inning saw the lead keep growing after a Taylor Tomlin RBI single, a Matt McGann RBI single, and a RBI double from Nigh as Oakland led 11-3.

Oakland would add two final runs in the seventh to seal the 13-3 run-rule win.

Oakland's offensive outburst was fueled by standout performances throughout the lineup. John Lauinger led the way, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple, five RBIs, four runs scored, and two hit-by-pitches.Brandon Nigh added a 2-for-3 effort with a double, an RBI, three runs scored, and two walks. Matthew McGann also went 2-for-3, contributing a double, an RBI, two runs scored, and was hit by a pitch twice. Taylor Tomlin rounded out the top performances, finishing 2-for-3 with three runs, an RBI, two walks, and a stolen base.

Oakland's offense produced seven extra-base hits, including three doubles, two triples, and a home run. The Golden Grizzlies also recorded four two-out RBIs and went 7-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

GAME 2 

Oakland dropped a high-scoring affair in game two, 13-12, as the Penguins walked it off after a special rally in the top of the ninth for the Golden Grizzlies.

Despite a late surge, the Golden Grizzlies came up just short in a game that featured a combined 25 runs and 24 hits. Oakland scored 12 runs on 9 hits, drawing 14 walks and getting hit by three pitches. The team left 14 runners on base and committed three errors.

Entering the top of the ninth inning trailing 6-11, Oakland would scrape and claw their way into the lead by the middle of the inning. The rally began with a RBI single from Trent Rice, followed by a score on a wild pitch as Oakland quickly put two runs on the board to trail 8-11. Sam Griffith would later score on a fielder's choice after reaching on a walk. Another run would score on a Lauinger single to knot the game, before a go-ahead score by Nigh on a throwing error by YSU as Oakland took the lead.

With just three outs left to send the game to extras, the Penguins would need just two hits to end things, a Nathan Beckley single that was followed by a Brady Shannon two-run walk-off homer to end the game.

Oakland's offense was highlighted by contributions up and down the lineup. Carter Hain led the way with two hits (2-for-5) and three RBIs, while Trent Rice added a pair of hits (2-for-5), two runs, and two RBIs. John Lauinger also drove in three runs on one hit. Ben Clark scored twice and drove in a run, and Matthew McGann contributed two hits (2-for-4), two runs, and an RBI.

GAME 3

The final game of the series saw both offenses take a step back, as the game ended with a 4-1 score in a low scoring affair.

The Penguins tacked on a run first as Kyle Fossum slammed a home run to left field in the bottom of the first.

After the home run, both teams would go scoreless for the next five innings before YSU added another run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch as they led 0-2.

The Golden Grizzlies would finally break their scoreless drought in the eighth inning as Tomlin's RBI single pulled Oakland right back into the game, trailing just 1-2 with two innings left.

Shannon would extend the Penguins' lead back to two runs in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run. He was followed by a Rover RBI double, ultimately sealing the game and the series for YSU.

Oakland will stay on the road, heading to Mount Pleasant for a final matchup with Central Michigan on Tuesday, May 13 before returning home for their regular season finale on Thursday, May 15.
