Oakland Homers Three Times as They Dominate Penguins in #HLBASE Championship Opener

DAYTON, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies kicked off their Horizon League Championship stay with a bang, dominating Youngstown State (YSU) 13-2 behind a power surge from the batter's box, with homers from Trent Rice, Carter Hain, and Ben Clark help Oakland advance to the next round of the #HLBASE Championship.

The Penguins struck gold first in the bottom of the second inning as a two-out triple from Nathan Beckley led to an RBI single by Nic Goodwin gave YSU a 1-0 lead.

Oakland would use their speed in the top of the third to knot the game, as a fielding error and two throwing errors on Mikos for the Penguins allowed Sam Griffith to score on an errand pickoff attempt on Trent Rice, evening the score.

The Golden Grizzlies would snatch the momentum of the game, as John Lauinger led the inning off with a single, making his way to third base after a stolen base to set up a perfect RBI bunt single by Ben Clark to score Lauinger and turn the score 2-1. The very next batter, Sam Griffith, delivered a huge two-RBI double to right field, giving Oakland a 4-1 cushion as they now sat in the driver's seat.

The runs onslaught continued for Oakland as they used some small ball to extend their lead. Lauinger dropped in a no-out single to load the bases in the top of the fifth, allowing for a run to score on a walk drawn by Carter Hain, another to score on a Jack Lux fielder's choice, and a sacrifice bunt by Clark as Oakland led 7-1.

Runs would keep tacking on for Oakland in the sixth as Rice blasted a leadoff home run to start the inning, adding insurance for the Golden Grizzlies as they led 8-1.

The Rice homer ended the day for Penguins starter Brandon Mikos, pelting eight hits and eight runs through five innings against the YSU starter.

Carter Hain added three more runs before the end of the sixth, capping off a four-run inning with a three run bomb over the left field wall, adding even more insurance for the Golden Grizzlies as they held complete command at 11-1.

The seventh inning saw two more runs cross the plate as Ben Clark took his turn to go yard, sending another leadoff homerun over the wall. McGann would score another run on a sacrifice fly that nearly left the yard, making the score 13-2 in favor of Oakland, and closing the scoring out there.

Hunter Pidek earned the emphatic win on the mound, throwing his second complete game of the season, striking out eight batters and allowing just two runs.

The Golden Grizzlies hit three home runs in a game for the second time this season, the first since a five home run affair against Purdue Fort Wayne (3/28). Four Oakland players tallied multiple hits in the game, as Lauinger (3-for-5), Nigh (2-for-4), Clark (2-for-4, 3 RBI), and Griffith (2-for-5, 2 RBI) all made a lasting impact. Hain (1-for-4) led the team with four RBI, his third game this season with 3+ RBIs.

Oakland will advance and take on number one seed and host team Wright State on Thursday, May 22 at 11 a.m. as they look to keep their championship hopes moving forward.
