Baseball Falls in Heartbreaker to Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Despite a strong offensive showing from Taylor Tomlin and Trent Rice, Oakland fell just short in extra innings, losing a 10-inning thriller to Michigan, 8-7, Wednesday evening at Ray Fisher Stadium.

Tomlin continued his firey stretch at the plate, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Rice blasted a clutch two-run homer in the eighth and drove in three runs on the day. Oakland tallied 13 hits but left 14 runners on base in the narrow loss.

The Wolverines would score the first five runs of the game, taking a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning. Oakland would scratch the scoreboard for the first time in the fifth as Tomlin singled through the right side of the infield, scoring a run and allowing another to score on an error on the play, as Oakland trailed 5-2.

After Michigan added a run in the fifth, the Golden Grizzlies would benefit from a Carter Hain RBI single in the seventh and a two-run bomb from Rice in the eighth to tie the game and eventually send it into extra innings.

Oakland pushed across a run in the top of the 10th when Rice led off with a double and scored on John Lauinger's RBI single. But Michigan would get the last laugh in the bottom half, plating two runs, including the walk-off score on a sacrifice fly by Tito Flores.

Along with Tomlin (4-for-4, RBI) and Rice (2-for-3, 3 RBI) who had big days, Hain (3-for-6, RBI) and Lauinger (2-for-6, RBI) made differences in the game.

Oakland continues their road stretch this weekend as they take on Milwaukee beginning on Friday, Apr. 11 at 6 p.m.
