Golden Grizzlies put up 15 Runs in Series Finale Against Penguins as they Close out Weekend

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies earned a dominating win in the final game of their series against the Youngstown State Penguins, but still fell in the series 1-2 in their second home conference series.

GAME 1

In the first of a series-starting doubleheader, Oakland fell 3-4 behind an explosive fourth inning from YSU.

Brandon Nigh started the scoring, plating John Lauinger on a RBI single in the first inning as the Golden Grizzlies originally led.

Scoreless baseball ensued for the next two and a half innings as Hunter Pidek struck out nine of the first batters he faced as he controlled everything on the mound.

Pidek's second hit given up would even the score as Tommy Rover slammed a solo homer to right field.

The Penguins would bring across two more runs on an RBI single and double before the end of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Pidek would continue to deal, tossing six innings and a career-high ten strikeouts. He would close his day out by holding YSU scoreless in the sixth, allowing Oakland to tie the game in the bottom of he inning at three behind a Taylor Tomlin sacrifice fly and Matt McGann RBI single.

Jay Wrona would give the Penguins the go-ahead run on a RBI single in the top of the seventh inning, giving them a 4-3 lead that they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.

Nigh (2-for-4) and Trent Rice (2-for-4) both accumulated multiple hits for Oakland, while combining for four stolen bases,

GAME 2

Oakland would drop the second game of the doubleheader on Friday 4-7 as their bats went cold and YSU's got hot.

The Penguins jumped out the gate to a 3-0 lead via three solo home runs. Kyle Fossum would extend his conference home run margin with a leadoff dinger to start the game. He would hit another one over the fence to begin the second inning as well, combining with Rover for back-to-back homers.

Oakland would fight back, reaching base and staying heads up on the base path as Ben Clark  scored on a John Lauinger ground out and Trent Rice scored on a passed ball as the Golden Grizzlies trailed 3-2 in the third.
The Penguins would pull away again in the seventh inning as Eli Brown skied a grand slam to left field.

Rice and Clark would score once again on wild plays in the bottom portion of the seventh, but it was not enough to complete the rally.

Clark and Rice both went 2-for-3 from the plate, while Rice stole three bases.

GAME 3

The teams would get a day break before closing the series out on Sunday, as Oakland ripped the game open in the fourth inning to guide themselves to a series-closing 15-5 win in seven innings.

Oakland would find themselves down 3-1 heading into the fourth, with their lone run coming on a McGann RBI double in the first. The fourth inning scoring would kick off with a Clark RBI double to make the score 2-4. Carter Hain would then score on a wild pitch, and Boston Halloran would cross the plate on a Sam Griffith groundout to tie the game.

Nigh would bring the go-ahead run across on a sac fly, and advance the speedy Rice who would score on a passed ball as he continued to cause havoc on the basepath, stealing eight bases during the series.

Taylor Tomlin would later score on a throwing error by YSU' catcher, and McGann would close out the eight-run inning with a two-RBI home run as the Golden Grizzlies took a 9-4 lead.

The runs would keep pouring through for Oakland as Griffith and Clark both doubled in the fifth and sixth innings to score runs, ballooning the lead to 12-5 as the game entered the seventh inning.

Looking to end the game early, Oakland continued to push the pace in the seventh. They would capitalize on a disastrous play by the Penguins defense, who struggled all game, as Nigh advanced on a dropped third strike that was overthrown by the YSU catcher, allowing for two runs to score and for Nigh to reach third. Tomlin would step in and send a fly ball deep enough for Nigh to tag-up and cross the plate to end the game.

McGann's 3-for-4, three RBI performance led the way. Griffith (2-for-4) also brought across three RBI as Oakland scored their second most runs in a game this season.

For their next game Oakland travels for a midweek matchup against the Wolverines in Ann Arbor on Wednesday, Apr. 9 at 4 p.m.
