Golden Grizzlies Score Season-High in Runs as they Leave NKU with a Series Win

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Golden Grizzlies score their second conference series win, once again besting Northern Kentucky (NKU) two games to one in a trio of thrilling games.

Game 1

The Golden Grizzlies and the Norse played a close game to start the series, with NKU escaping with a slim 4-5 win.

Brandon Nigh opened things up with a bang, giving Oakland a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a two run homer, marking his sixth consecutive game with a hit and his second homer in the last three games.

NKU would take the lead in the fourth inning, with a RBI double from JAke Altman and a run-scoring single from Brennan Rowe as the Norse went up 3-2.

Jack Lux would make his mark on the game for Oakland in the seventh as he fought to regain the lead for the Golden Grizzlies as he knocked an RBI single to tie the game at three, before making his way to third base to score on a wild pitch as a 4-3 lead favored Oakland.

The Norse would make some pivotal plays down the final stretch, with a game-tying single in the seventh and a go-ahead sac fly in the eighth by Rowe that secured the win for the Norse.

John Lauinger (2-for-4) was the only Golden Grizzly to earn multiple hits, while Nigh (1-for-4, 2 RBI) had multiple RBIs.

Hunter Pidek had a solid start, striking out five batters in five innings pitched, allowing just four hits.

Game 2

Game number two saw more late game heroics, this time from the Oakland side as a big rally in the top of the ninth inning to score a 9-7 win.

With NKU up one heading into the sixth inning, Matt McGann hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season for Oakland to tie the game 4-4.

Singles from Davenport and Rowe would give NKU a two lead cushion in the bottom of the eighth, but from there on out it was all Oakland.

The Golden Grizzlies would score five runs in the top of the ninth, starting with a rio of RBI singles from Carter Hain, Aidan Schuck, and Sam Griffith to move the score to 8-6 in favor of Oakland. Taylor Tomlin drew a bases-loaded walk to score another run, giving Oakland the run they needed to secure the win.

McGann (2-for-5, RBI) and Schuck (2-for-4, 2 RBI) led the way at the plate for Oakland in the win.

Game 3

The final game saw Oakland secure their second series win over NKU this season, closing the series out in a game full of offensive explosions by both teams, as the Golden Grizzlies held on for a 16-10 lead.

Oakland initiated the scoring with five unanswered runs. Carter Hain would kick it off with a RBI double in the second inning, while Ben Clark and Trent Rice added run-scoring singles in the inning as well. Nigh would slam another home run, his fourth of the season, to extend the lead to 5-0 in the third inning.

NKU would hold Oakland scoreless until the eighth inning, giving the Norse enough time to mount a comeback and take the lead, highlighted by a Nolan Sparks two-run homer in the fourth, and RBI doubles by Gabe Miranda and Jake Paulick in the fifth inning as NKU took a 7-5 lead.

The Golden Grizzlies would awaken from their scoreless streak in the eighth inning, scoring six runs. McGann and Clark came through with RBI singles, while Lauinger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Schuck grounded into a fielder's choice to score one, and Sam Griffith laid down a perfect sac bunt to close it out as Oakland led 11-7 by the end of the frame.

NKU would add one to their tally in the bottom of the eighth, but Oakland would get back on their horse and score another four runs for insurance in the top of the ninth with singles from Lauinger, Rice, and Clark as Oakland tallied their highest run total of the season for the win.

Rice (3-for-4, 4 RBI) and Clark (3-for-5, 3 RBI), led the way at the plate. Griffith (2 RBI), Lauinger (2 RBI), McGann (2-for-5, 2 RBI), and Hain (2 RBI) all added to the scoreboard with a hit and multiple runs brought home.

Oakland returns home for a non-conference matchup against Toledo on Wednesday, Apr. 30 at 3 p.m.
