Baseball Suffers Sweep to Wright State

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies returned home for a series against the conference leading Wright State Raiders. Despite jumping out to early leads in two of the three games over the weekend series, Oakland suffered a sweep as the timely hitting of Wright State granted the Raiders a full-season sweep.

GAME 1 | THURSDAY, APR. 17 | 3 PM

Oakland was unable to outlast the Raiders in the series opening contest, falling 12-5 despite leading as deep into the game as the fifth inning.

The Golden Grizzlies initially took a lead in the first inning after a two-RBI triple from Carter Hain gave Oakland a 2-1 lead.

Wright State would briefly knot the game up in the second off of a Cam Gilkerson RBI double, but Oakland responded with RBI singles from John Lauinger and Jack Lux in the third inning to retake the lead at 4-2.

Tanner Ware, who earned the start on the bump for Oakland, had a very impressive performance, going five innings with just one earned run and striking out four batters.

The Raiders would take control in the fifth inning, taking a 5-4 lead after Luke Arnold, who previously brought around a run on an RBI double in the inning, scored another run on a wild pitch.

With the lead now in their control, Wright State would add five insurance runs in the top of the ninth, highlighted by Gilkerson and Arnold home runs in the inning.

Brandon Nigh added a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to make the score 12-5, but the Oakland rally would end there.

Taylor Tomlin (2-for-4), John Lauinger (2-for-4, RBI), and Nigh (2-for-5, RBI) all tallied multiple hits on the day for the Golden Grizzlies.

GAME 2 | FRIDAY, APR. 18 | 2 PM

The second game of the weekend saw a multitude of runs scored, as both teams tallied double-digit runs as the Raiders beat Oakland 24-12 behind a 10-run ninth inning.

After going down 5-0 headed into the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Grizzlies racked up four runs in the bottom portion of the third inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Nigh and Hain as Oakland trailed just 4-5.

After a JP Pelteir solo homer in the fifth put Wright State back up two, the Golden Grizzlies once again lit it up at the plate in the bottom half, this time using a Lauinger triple and Jack Lux homer to take a 7-6 lead after five.

As the game continued to go back and forth, Wright State retook the lead with a combined five runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Savvy baserunning in the seventh and eighth from Lauinger and Clark would add a couple runs for Oakland, as they trailed 9-14 going into the final inning.

With the game still very much in the balance, the Raiders would blow open the lead, using five hits and two home runs to expand their lead to 24-9.

Oakland went down swinging in the bottom half. Nigh scored his third hit of the game with a RBI double, and later scored on a Halloran grounder, and Clark would score the same way later in the inning as the Golden Grizzlies added three runs to close out the game.

Lauinger (3-of-4, RBI) and Nigh (3-of-4, 2 RBI) led Oakland in hits, while Hain (2-of-5, 3 RBI) notched three RBI in a game for the second time this season.

For the Raiders, Gus Gregory set their program record with 11 RBIs as he went 5-for-6 from the plate, including a grand slam.

GAME 3 | SATURDAY, APR. 19 | 1 PM

The third game was a complete change from game two as Oakland's bats went cold, resulting in a shutout 0-5 loss for Oakland.

In just their third shutout of the season, the Golden Grizzlies couldn't take advantage of a solid outing by freshman ace Grant Garman, who tossed five innings and struck out four batters.

The Raiders would score on a Patrick Fultz RBI single in the first, on a pair of sac fly balls and a grounder in the fifth and sixth, and capped off by a Cam Gilkerson solo homer in the eighth inning.

Oakland tallied just four hits in the series finale, one each coming from Aidan Orr (1-for-4), Nigh (1-for-3), Sam Griffith (1-for-3) and Trent Rice (1-for-3).

For their next game Oakland will hit the road for a brief one-game trip to Toledo on Monday, Apr. 21 at 3 p.m.
