McGann Shines as Golden Grizzlies Suffer Sweep to Mastodons

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Golden Grizzlies suffered a series sweep to the Mastodons over the weekend in a nail-biting series.

Despite the series loss, Oakland was in nearly every game until the end, losing by a combined score of 20-23, including walk-off losses in the first two games of the series.

GAME 1

The opening game of the series was full of fireworks as Purdue Fort Wayne emerged victorious in walk-off fashion by a score of 13-14.

For Oakland, the game was highlighted by Matt McGann, who homered three times over the course of the day.

McGann started the day with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. The Mastodons would respond in the bottom of the first and second innings, combining for nine runs over two innings as PFW took a 9-2 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning McGann ripped another one over the fence, scoring two runs to pull Oakland closer with the score 9-4. Boston Halloran would follow suit in the fourth inning with a solo home run, making the score 9-5.

After the Mastodons responded with a solo dinger in the bottom portion of the fourth, Halloran added a double to his tally, followed by a Sam Griffith three-run bomb to pull Oakland within one run at 9-10.

The sixth inning saw more deep shots, with McGann's third and final homer in the sixth inning, and Halloran's third RBI of the day on a single.

The tide would shift in the ninth inning, as Oakland finally took the lead as a McGann fielder's choice to give the Golden Grizzlies a 13-12 lead.

With just three outs left to close the game out, PFW's Brooks Sailors would slash Oakland's hopes with a walk-off, two RBI home run.

Despite the loss, Oakland had one of their best offensive showings of the season. McGann (3-for-6, 3 HR, 6 RBI) set a career high in RBI and home runs. Jack Lux (2-for-5) and Boston Halloran (3-for-4, 3 RBI) also tallied multiple hits.

Game 2

Oakland would take the field in the first of two games on Saturday, in a more grind out, marathon match.

The scoring would start in the fourth inning as PFW's Justin Osterhouse delivered a solo home run.

The teams would trade scores for the remainder of the game, with a John Lauinger RBI single in the fifth inning tied the game, and a PFW sacrifice fly regained the lead for the Mastodons in the bottom portion of the same inning.

Taylor Tomlin blasted an RBI single to center field to knot the game, and eventually send the game into extra innings.

With the game once again on the line, PFW delivered a devastating blow as Nick Hockemeyer lobbed a RBI single to left field, giving the Mastodons their second consecutive walk-off win with the score 3-2.

Despite a loss, Grant Garman tossed 7.2 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters for the second straight start.

Game 3

Just thirty minutes after the dramatics of game two, the teams reset and took the diamond for one last faceoff as Oakland fell 5-6.

The Mastodons began the scoring with sacrifice plays in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Golden Grizzlies would respond with an electric double steal in the second inning, with one of the stolen bases being home as Carter Hain beat the tag at home plate.

A Camden Karczewski home run in the bottom of the second inning, and a bases loaded hit by pitch in the fourth inning would give PFW a 4-1 lead.

The Golden Grizzlies would storm back just like they had all series, scoring four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a Jack Lux three-run home run and a Carter Hain RBI double, to take a 5-4 lead.

PFW would have the last word as Osterhouse would slap his own two-run homer to take a 5-6 lead and ride that to the finish line.

The Golden Grizzlies will return home for the next series, hosting the Youngstown State Penguins beginning on Friday, Apr. 4 at 3 p.m.
