Halloran Walks it Off as Golden Grizzlies Complete Rally Against Cougars

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies used some dramatics to sneak by the visiting Cleary Cougars en route to a 10-9 victory on Wednesday.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead behind a two RBI triple by Hector Montilla to go up 2-0 in the top half of the first. A RBI sacrifice bunt by Ryan Rose in the top of the third would expand the Cougars' lead to 3-0 as they were in control early.

Oakland wouldn't stay down for long, knotting the game at three behind a pair of RBI doubles from Taylor Tomlin and Aidan Orr in the bottom portion of the third inning.

With the game back square, Cleary continued to impress, retaking a two-run lead with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and a score on a past ball, both by Austin Vincent, as the Cougars went up 5-3.

Continuing a back and forth affair, Oakland would even the score once again in the bottom of the sixth inning, this time off the bat of Sam Griffith as he singled to center field, plating two runs, to knot the score at five runs each.

In the final stretch, with extras in sight, the Cougars once again responded to Oakland, this time scoring four runs in the top of the seventh, three runs on a RBI single from Gavin Kempainen, as they took a commanding 9-5 lead.

Down to their last three outs, the Golden Grizzlies dug deep and showcased the hitting and baserunning they had been in search of all game.

It started with a leadoff double down the left field line by Trent Rice, followed by a Tomlin single to place runners at the corners. John Lauinger, fresh off the bench in his first at-bat of the game, sliced a pinch-hit, RBI single to score Rice and pull Oakland closer at 6-9.

Brandon Nigh would ground out for the first out of the inning, but not in vain as a run slid past the catcher, now bringing the Golden Grizzlies closer as the score was 7-9.

With the lead now in reach, Aidan Schuck placed down a perfect sacrifice bunt that scooted down the first base line, bringing across Carter Hain who previously singled, to tie the game.

With one out left on the board, Boston Halloran delivered the walk-off single to give Oakland their fourth win in their last five games and complete the final-inning rally.

Tomlin (3-for-5, 2 RBI) and Griffith (2-for-4, 2 RBI) led the charge at the plate for the Golden Grizzlies, while Tanner Ware earned his first win of the season on the mound, throwing one inning, allowing just one hit.

Oakland next heads to Purdue Fort Wayne for a weekend series, beginning Friday, Mar. 28 at 3 p.m.
