LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Golden Grizzlies put up a strong fight against No. 25 Louisville on Wednesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium but ultimately fell short, 13-5.
The Golden Grizzlies (3-15, 0-0 HL) saw a trio of players record a pair of hits as
Brandon Nigh batted in a pair of runners. Starter
Ethan Glassman led the pitchers with three strikeouts.
The Cardinals (14-2, 0-0 ACC) were led by Jake Munroe who tacked on four hits with four RBI and a pair of pitchers struck out two batters each.
The game started as a pitchers' duel, with both teams remaining scoreless through the first two innings. Oakland struck first in the top of the third when
Matthew McGann delivered a clutch RBI double to put the Golden Grizzlies on the board. However, Louisville responded swiftly in the bottom half of the inning, plating three runs to take the lead.
Oakland's biggest offensive surge came in the following inning when they rallied for four runs.
Sam Griffith's sacrifice fly that brought the first run, as
Trent Rice added to the tally, capitalizing on a Louisville miscue.
Brandon Nigh came through and followed the pair of runs with a crucial two-run double to give Oakland a 5-3 lead.
Louisville chipped away in the fifth with a solo run before taking control in the sixth inning as a seven-run inning put Oakland down, 11-5. Louisville tacked on two more runs in the eighth to secure the win, 13-5.
The Golden Grizzlies turn to Horizon League play as it heads to Wright State to face the Raiders for a three-game series (March 14-16).
