Smith Eclipses 20 Points for Sixth Time this Season; Golden Grizzlies Fall to Vikings on the Road

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies were unable to score a win on their weekend road trip, falling 58-79 at Cleveland State.

Macy Smith secured her sixth 20-point game of the season, nailing five threes (5-of-10 3FG) en route to  tying her career-high of 25 points.  Dani Grim also reached double-digits with 13 points (6-of-13 FG) and five rebounds. Maddy Skorupski ended with 10 points, four assists, and four steals for the Golden Grizzlies as well.

Destiny Leo would pace the Vikings scorers with 20 points (5-of-9 3FG), while Sara Guerreiro (16 points), Jordana Reisma (15 points), and Mickayla Perdue (14 points) also scored in double-digits for the Vikings.

Smith ignited the scoring for Oakland early, scoring all five points for the Golden Grizzlies as they trailed 5-8 in the early going.

Despite Oakland's offense sputtering to start the game, beginning 3-of-11 from the field, The Golden Grizzlies would finish the quarter  by making three of their five final shots to pull within four points, trailing 14-18 behind eight first quarter points from Smith.

The Vikings would hold a slim lead due to their offense, as they shot .615 (8-of-13 FG) in the opening frame.

As the teams continued trading buckets to start the quarter, Cleveland State gained a double-digit lead behind three straight triples from Leo, giving the Vikings a 31-20 lead.

Smith and Grim would continue to carry the offensive load in the quarter, scoring 10 of Oakland's 12 points in the second quarter as the team shot .364 (4-of-11 FG) to trail 26-38 at halftime.

Smith notched her fourth consecutive double-digit game in the first half, scoring a team-high 13 points, while Grim added nine (4-of-8 FG).

As a team Oakland shot .360 (9-of-25 FG), trailing the efficiency of the Vikings who shot .652 (15-of-23 FG). Both teams hit four threes each, with Leo and Smith both hitting three for their respective squads.

The Golden Grizzlies did force seven first-half turnovers from the Vikings, compared to just six of their own. Oakland would have to turn up their defensive intensity to create harder looks for Cleveland State in the second half.

The deficit would grow for Oakland as Cleveland State began the second half with a 10-2 run, taking a 48-28 lead.

Oakland was unable to figure out the Vikings zone, going 3-of-12 from the field in the third quarter. The Golden Grizzlies did make attacking efforts, getting to the free throw line at a higher rate in the third (7-of-8 FT), but they still trailed 40-60 at the end of the third quarter as Cleveland State shot over .600 from the field once again.

Oakland would have their highest scoring and most efficient quarter of the game in the fourth, tallying 18 points on .375 shooting (6-of-16 FG), but they couldn't make up enough ground to come out with the victory.

The Golden Grizzlies return home and await a showdown with the Green Bay Phoenix on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
