Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Kurt Szymanksi

Golden Grizzlies Outpaced by Phoenix at Home

ROCHESTER, Mich. - After giving it their all, the Oakland women's basketball team fell to the Green Bay Phoenix from inside the OU Credit Union O'Rena, 75-39.

Kylie Buckley led the Golden Grizzlies in scoring, dropping eight points, while Macy Smith and Jasmine Dupree-Hebert followed close behind with six points. Off the glass, Madison Royal-Davis led Oakland in that department, snagging five rebounds.

For the Phoenix, Cassie Schiltz scored a team-high 15 points, becoming one of four Phoenix to score in double-figures. Natalie McNeal grabbed the most rebounds for Green Bay with eight, while Bailey Butler dished out the most assists of the night with eight.

Smith got on the board first for the Golden Grizzlies, driving straight through the Phoenix defense for a tough lay-in. Green Bay responded on the next possession with a three from guard Callie Genke.

Genkne's three sparked the Phoenix in the early stages of the first quarter, as Green Bay converted on their first five attempts from deep. For Oakland, the team had some great looks at the start, but the Golden Grizzlies couldn't catch fire like the Phoenix did in the opening moments.

Toward the end of the quarter, Oakland finally ended Green Bay's hot start from the three-point line, forcing the Phoenix to miss all of their attempts from three the rest of the quarter. On Oakland's final possession of the first, Maddy Skorupski buried a free throw, putting the Golden Grizzlies down 21-7 to end the first.

Both teams got off to the races at the start of the second quarter, as Dupree-Hebert knocked down a long-range three for the Golden Grizzlies. Maddy Schreiber responded with a layup during Green Bay's next possession.

Despite some tough Oakland defense midway through the second, Green Bay eventually started to put some consistent offense together, primarily attacking the paint. The Golden Grizzlies entered the half down 39-15.

Heading into the break, the Golden Grizzlies were .333 (6-for-18) from the field and .333 from deep (2-for-6). In comparison, the Phoenix shot at a .484 (15-for-31) clip from the floor and .455 (5-for-11) from beyond the arc. Green Bay also led the rebound battle at the half, 15-12.

In the third quarter, the Phoenix continued to get the best of the Golden Grizzlies on both sides of the floor, ballooning its lead to 61-21.

Oakland didn't back down in the final quarter of play, keeping pace with the Phoenix, but Green Bay made a comeback nearly impossible to accomplish as the Golden Grizzlies fell 75-39.

By the end of the game, the Golden Grizzlies finished shooting at a .306 (15-for-49) clip while making their threes at a .278 (5-for-18) rate. The Phoenix ended the game shooting .508 (30-for-59) from the field and .474 (9-for-19) from deep. Additionally, Green Bay won the rebound battle 34-31.

Up next, the Golden Grizzlies will look to get back in the win column as they host the Milwaukee Panthers at the OU Credit Union O'Rena on Saturday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., and the game will be live-streamed on ESPN+.
