Golden Grizzlies Start Road Trip with Loss to Mastodons

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Golden Grizzlies would face-off with the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons, dropping the game 46-75 in the first match of their two-game road trip.

Macy Smith led the Golden Grizzlies on the scoreboard, extending her double-digit scoring streak to four games as she tallied 15 points (6-of-13 FG). Dani Grim also pitched in eight points (4-of-10 FG), and Lianna Baxter added seven points  and seven rebounds.

For the Mastodons Audra Emerson tied the game-high with 15 points (5-of-7 3FG), while Lauren Ross added 12 points.

The Mastodons started the game with their usual offensive formula, knocking in triples as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind a pair of threes.

After another triple from Ross, Oakland would snap the PFW run with buckets on three consecutive trips to cut the lead to 11-8

PFW's Renna Schwieterman would beat the buzzer on a final second score, cushioning their lead at the end of the first period as Oakland trailed 11-18.

Despite trailing, Oakland shot .417 (5-of-12 FG) from the floor compared to the Mastodons' .333 (7-of-21 FG), the biggest difference came from beyond the arc, where PFW nailed four threes to just one from Oakland from Jazzy Dupree-Hebert, and on the glass where PFW grabbed 16 boards to Oakland's five.

Both teams continued to test each other to start the second quarter. The Golden Grizzlies found success in the midrange as Smith and Grim knocked down pullup jumpers early in the quarter as Oakland trailed 15-26 halfway through.

Oakland's defense seemed to warm up, holding the Mastodons scoreless for over four minutes as they worked to claw their way into the game.

PFW would respond, bursting into a 9-0 run, before Maddy Skorupski earned her first bucket of the game, picking the pocket of the Mastodons and going the other way for a buzzer-beating layup to send Oakland into halftime on a positive note, despite trailing 18-37.

Smith led Oakland in scoring in the first half, tallying six points. Lianna Baxter and Jazzy Dupree-Hebert pitched in three points each as well.

After an efficient first quarter, the Golden Grizzlies went cold in the second, going 3-of-14 from the floor. They also struggled on the defensive glass, as PFW reached 14 offensive rebounds in the half.

Oakland did however win the turnover battle, forcing eight PFW turnovers. The Golden Grizzlies had many occasions where their active hands caused tie-ups in the backcourt of PFW as well, as they looked for any source of momentum.

The Mastodons immediately hit an 8-0 run to start the second half, sparked by a pair of triples by Amelia Bromenschenkel and Emmerson. Smith and Grim would continue to anchor Oakland offensively, halting the run with back-to-back jumpers as the Golden Grizzlies continued to attack the midrange, trailing 22-45.

The deficit would grow for Oakland, as they trailed 32-59 at the end of the third.

Despite trailing, Oakland had their highest scoring quarter of the game, scoring 14 points in the frame, while also outrebounding PFW 10 to nine in the quarter as well.

The Golden Grizzlies would tie their scoring total from the third quarter in the fourth, going for 14 points on .353 efficiency (6-of-17 FG), but they were unable to close the scoring gap.

The Golden Grizzlies close out their two-game road stint at Cleveland State on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 12 pm.
