Oakland's Comeback Bid Fizzles in Final Quarter against IU Indy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - In Oakland's last road game of the season, the Golden Grizzlies could not come away with a win despite putting up a resilient effort in the game's final moments, falling to the IU Indy Jaguars 80-65 from inside The Jungle.

Maddy Skorupski led the way for the Golden Grizzlies, scoring 28 points while dishing out a team-high five assists. Macy Smith joined Skorupski in the double-digit scoring effort with 11 points, while Madison Royal-Davis snagged a team-best 11 rebounds.

For the Jaguars, Alexa Hocevar led the team in scoring with 19 points while also coming away with five rebounds. Faith Stinson led the Jaguars off the glass, securing nine rebounds and 18 points.

Dani Grim got on the board first for Oakland, knocking down a mid-range jumper in the opening moments of the first quarter. IU Indy responded on the next possession, as Hocevar made it down low and converted a layup.

Following Hocevar's layup, the Jaguars went on a 12-0 run midway through the first, quickly establishing a double-digit lead over the Golden Grizzlies. However, Oakland showed a ton of effort down the stretch, as Smith supplemented the offense, not allowing the Jaguars to run away with it.

At the start of the second quarter, IU Indy's strong defense continued to get the best of the Golden Grizzlies. Through the first four minutes of play, all of Oakland's offense came from the charity stripe, as Smith made a couple and Royal-Davis split her attempts.

With the second coming to a close, the Jaguar's game plan to attack the paint and the three-point line continued to pay off. With a chance to regroup at halftime, the Golden Grizzlies trailed the Jaguars, 41-19.

Heading into the break, Oakland shot at a .250 (7-for-28) clip from the field and a .200 (1-for-5) rate from beyond the arc. In comparison, IU Indy shot at a .433 (13-for-30) clip from the floor and a .357 (5-for-14) rate from deep. The Jaguars also held the advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Golden Grizzlies 22-15.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Oakland showed IU Indy they weren't backing down as Skorupski got involved early for the Golden Grizzlies, scoring two mid-range baskets in the span of a minute.

Throughout the rest of the third, Oakland kept pace with IU Indy. Anytime the Jaguars scored, the Golden Grizzlies answered back on offense. By the end of the quarter, Oakland was still behind IU Indy, 58-39.

With a large deficit to make up in the fourth quarter, the Golden Grizzlies showed some fight as a Skorupski three started a 12-0 run. A once 24-point IU Indy lead had evaporated to just a five-point IU Indy lead with three minutes to go.

However, Oakland couldn't complete a comeback, as Katie Davidson lifted the Jaguars to an 80-65 win in the game's closing moments.

At the end of the game, the Golden Grizzlies shot at a .393 (24-for-61) clip from the field and a .250 (3-for-12) rate from three-point range. The Jaguars shot at a .436 (24-for-55) clip from the floor and a .364 (8-for-22) rate from deep. The Golden Grizzlies and the Jaguars finished dead-even in the rebounding department, with both teams securing 33 boards.

Up next, the Golden Grizzlies will look to get back in the win column as they host the Northern Kentucky Norse on senior night on Saturday, March 1, at the OU Credit Union O'Rena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., and the game can be live-streamed on ESPN+.
