Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jordan Nelson

Royal-Davis Dominates the Boards; Smith and Grim Shine on Senior Day as Golden Grizzlies Fall to NKU in Regular Season Finale

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies and the Norse played their second tightly contested game of the season, as Oakland fell 58-61 in a nail-biting regular season finale.

Madison Royal-Davis had one of her best games of the season for Oakland, notching her second double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and adding 19 rebounds, the most in a single game of any Horizon League Women's Basketball player this season. She also added four steals and three blocks to her statline.

Macy Smith scored a team-high 17 points for the Golden Grizzlies, while Dani Grim added 13 points, four assists, and five rebounds in what was a big day for the Oakland seniors.

For the Norse, Macey Blevins led the team with 15 points, while Amy Wolterman notched 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Golden Grizzlies started off sharp on both ends, beginning the game 3-for-5 from the floor, and forcing a pair of NKU turnovers in the early going as Oakland took and early 6-4 lead.

The Norse would overcome their rough shooting start, responding with a 13-3 run, taking a 17-9 lead over the Golden Grizzlies.

Madison Royal-Davis would score through contact for an and-one conversion to break the NKU run, helping Oakland trail just 12-17 going into the second quarter.

The Norse would quickly extend their lead to double-digits, scoring five unanswered to start the second quarter and take a 22-12 lead.

Jazzy Dupree-Hebert and Grim would break Oakland's icy start to the second quarter, knocking down a pair of corner threes to trim the lead back inside of ten points, as Oakland trailed 18-24 halfway through the quarter.

Maddy Skorupski would score her first points of the half with a buzzer-beating floater to close out the half, as Oakland trailed 20-31 going into the break.

Despite shooting just .267 (8-of-30 FG) from the field in the first half, the Golden Grizzlies saw a pleasant output on the boards, specifically the offensive glass where they grabbed four offensive rebounds in the second quarter, nine total in the half.

They also caused their normal defensive disruption, tallying more blocks (3) and steals (7) than the Norse in the first half.

Madison Royal-Davis was everywhere in the first half, scoring five points and grabbing 11 rebounds, already just three short of her season and career high of 14.

Smith and Grim both also added five points each for Oakland.

The Norse shot .400 (12-of-30 FG) in the first half, led by eight points from Amy Wolterman.

The Golden Grizzlies came out of the locker room with a higher sense of intensity, forcing several sloppy NKU possessions, while Smith quickly scored five points to open the half, pulling Oakland closer as the score showed 27-34 in favor of the Norse.

Oakland saw their best offensive quarter thus far in the third, outscoring NKU 17 to 14, while shooting .429 (6-of-14 FG) from the field.

Grim would score her seventh point of the night at the buzzer, hitting a tough moving midrange jump shot as the clock went off to keep Oakland within striking distance at 37-45 with a quarter left to play.

Oakland would continue to play with urgency, as Grim, Smith, and Leah Bullard all registered buckets to start the fourth, stopping a 6-0 stint from the Norse that opened the quarter.

Oakland began to implement their signature press defense, causing havoc for the Norse as the Golden Grizzlies grabbed steals in the backcourt on three consecutive possessions, helping them score 10 unanswered points to tie the game at 56 apiece with two minutes left to play.

The Norse would take the lead back with under a minute left after a pair of free throws by Blevins, giving the Norse the cushion they needed to escape with a win.

The Golden Grizzlies will hit the road for their Horizon League Championship First Round matchup as they head to IU Indy on Tuesday, Mar. 4 at 7 p.m.
