ROCHESTER, Mich. - Nassim Mashhour set another career-high as
DQ Cole's late game heroics lifted the Golden Grizzlies over the Detroit Mercy Titans, 93-83, in overtime tonight inside the OU Credit Union O'rena.
This afternoon's win marked Horizon League win number 131 for Oakland head coach
Greg Kampe, tying the league record for most league victories. Doing so in just 12 seasons, Kampe is now one win away from surpassing Detroit Mercy's Perry Watson (1993-2008).
The Golden Grizzlies (12-15, 9-7 HL) had five players with double-digit points as Mashhour tallied a game-high 24 points, good to break his career-high he set Wednesday (Feb. 12).
Allen Mukeba led with 10 rebounds to go with his 13 points for a double-double.
The Titans (8-19, 4-12 HL) had four people in the double-digits in scoring, as Orlando Lovejoy led the team with 20 points.
It was a defensive battle in the beginning of the game, as Oakland was the only team to find the scoreboard in the first three minutes, scoring four points. The Titans answered with seven-straight points to put itself ahead, but Oakland answered with five-straight points from
Jaylen Jones, capped off by an and-one to set the tone for the back-and-forth battle of the game.
The Golden Grizzlies built a five-point lead at the 12:38 mark, but the Titans chipped away at the lead and eventually took a lead of its own with 10:25 to go. The lead was short lived as Mashhour sank a pair from the charity stripe, followed by a
Buru Naivalurua free throw and a
Malcolm Christie three. Oakland remained ahead until the Titans took control for a brief moment at the 5:33 mark, but
Deng Majak tallied four-straight points to regain the lead.
Not even two minutes passed and the game saw a pair of ties and a trio of lead changes as the Titans went ahead for good in the first half at the 2:52 mark and built its lead to five. Oakland, though, cut into the lead and added a trio of points to end the half to head into the locker room down just a pair, 42-40.
Oakland opened the second half with a pair from the charity stripe to knot things up, but the Titans quickly regained the lead. Just like the first half, the game teetered back-and-forth with neither team gaining a significant edge. The Titans though went on a quick run with the lead in hand and built its lead to eight with 14:43 to play, but Oakland came roaring back and retook its lead at the 9:15 mark off a Mashhour jumper as he drew the foul and drained the free throw.
Despite some ties, the Titans didn't see itself in the lead for nearly seven minutes, but went on a 7-0 run late to take a 75-73 lead with 1:47 to go. Mashhour was fouled with 1:32 to go and made one, but the Titans made a pair on the other end for a three-point lead with 1:07 to go. Oakland put up a shot with :48 seconds to go and it didn't drop as the Titans had the ball up three.
After a Titans timeout, the team looked to add insurance points for the win. However, a Titans turnover and a
Isaiah Jones steal gave Oakland the ball as Jones looked off a fast break layup to feed Cole. Cole couldn't find a good look and fed it back to I. Jones, who ultimately found Cole beyond the arc as he drilled the game-tying shot with :04 seconds to go. One final look from the Titans at the buzzer fell short as the game headed into overtime tied, 77-77.
The Golden Grizzlies defense showed up in extra time and locked down as I. Jones got the first points off free throws. The Titans tied it up, but a quick eight points from Oakland nearly sealed the game. I. Jones came up big once again as Oakland was up, 84-79, with 2:29 to go in overtime and he sank a three to put the game to rest. The eight-point lead was too much for the Titans as Oakland closed the game out and came out on top, 93-83.
The Golden Grizzlies narrowly outshot the Titans, as it shot at a .453 (24-of-53) clip from the floor with six made threes. The Titans, on the other hand, made 10 threes and were 31-of-71 (.443) from the floor. Detroit Mercy won the battle off the glass, with 40 compared to Oakland's 34, but the difference maker came from the charity stripe. The Titans were 11-of-13, while Oakland 39 of Oakland's points were from the free-throw line, out of 52 attempts. Thirty-nine free throw makes ties a program record, set two other times (vs. Michigan State, Dec. 22, 2015 & vs Grand Valley State, Dec. 9, 1993). It's 52 attempts ranks t-2nd in Oakland men's basketball history for most attempts (vs. Western Michigan, Dec. 11, 1999)
