"I love exhibition season — we always learn so much about ourselves," said head coach
Greg Kampe. "It's about what we can do and how we can get better. This was a great game for us."
Fifth-year forward
Tuburu Naivalurua led the way with 28 points, shooting 11-for-19 from the field, adding six rebounds and two blocks. Senior point guard
Brody Robinson contributed 19 points, converting 9-of-10 from the free-throw line, also recording five assists and three steals, and junior point guard
Khoi Thurmon added in nine points, four steals, and seven assists from the bench. The 6-8 power forward
Isaac Garrett finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots for the Black and Gold.
Oakland initiated the first half against the Warriors with a quick layup by sophomore
Nassim Mashhour, assisted by Garrett, capturing an early lead. Despite trading scores throughout, Oakland found momentum with Mashhour's pivotal 3-pointer, narrowing a brief Warrior advantage. The home team capitalized on a series of three-point plays, including two successful back-to-back shots by
Brett White II, which solidified their lead with three minutes left to go in the first half.
Garrett contributed defensively with three blocks, while Naivalurua added significant points in the paint. Oakland's bench also provided a substantial boost, contributing 24 points on offense. The half concluded with the Golden Grizzlies leading 54-44, establishing a strong position as they moved themselves into the next half.
Oakland maintained their lead throughout the second half, capitalizing on strong free-throw shooting and defensive rebounding. Robinson contributed significantly with a key 3-pointer at 17:01 and consistent free throws, while Naivalurua was effective in the paint. RCU attempted to close the gap, but Oakland's defensive efforts, including a crucial block by Naivalurua in the final seconds, secured their advantage. Oakland outscored RCU 45-46 in the half, leading to a final score of 99-90.
Oakland will open the 2025-26 regular season on the road for a tough in-state match up against No. 7 Michigan. Tip-off in Ann Arbor will commence on Monday, Nov. 3 at 8:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
