ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Golden Grizzlies men's basketball team fell to No. 7 Michigan 121-78 on Monday night at the Crisler Center. Despite hitting 11 three-pointers, the Grizzlies struggled to keep pace with the Wolverines' high-powered offense, which featured 19 three-pointers of its own. Michigan's bench contributed significantly, adding 55 points to secure the victory.
"I think we picked ourselves up well." said head coach
Greg Kampe. "Lose by 40 and you can say we played poorly and I don't think we did. I saw a lot of really good things, I'm not happy with the way it went, but I'm pleased that we walked out of here with a better understanding of things and a better understanding of my guys."
Junior
Isaac Garrett led the team with 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Fifth-year
Tuburu Naivalurua contributed 18 points, highlighted by three three-pointers, and added two steals. Senior
Ziare Wells finished with 14 points and collected six rebounds, while senior
Brody Robinson scored 11 points and distributed a team-high five assists, making three of six attempts from beyond the arc.
The game began with Oakland facing a challenging start against the Wolverines. Naivalurua provided an early spark with a three-pointer at 19:01, briefly narrowing the gap to 4-3. Despite Naivalurua's efforts, Michigan's consistent scoring runs, led by Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr., extended their lead significantly. Oakland struggled to keep pace, with Wells contributing with a dunk at 10:11 and Robinson adding a three-pointer at 11:44. The first half concluded with Oakland trailing Michigan, 69-38.
Oakland initiated the second half with a strong offensive push, highlighted by Garrett's scoring efforts. Garrett contributed significantly with key layups and a dunk, supported by assists from teammates like sophomore
Nassim Mashhour. Despite this effort, the Wolverines maintained their lead, countering with effective shooting from beyond the arc and inside the paint. The game ended with Michigan taking a 43 point differential as Oakland's attempts to close the gap were overshadowed by Michigan's consistent scoring.
The Golden Grizzlies are back on the road to face No. 1 Purdue in West Lafayette on Friday, Nov. 7. The matchup is set for 7 p.m. at Mackey Arena and available to stream on Peacock.
