Golden Grizzlies Split Weekend Road Trip as they Fall to Phoenix

GREEN BAY, Wis.- The Golden Grizzlies split their weekend road trip, falling to the Phoenix in Green Bay 39-69.

Dani Grim paced Oakland in scoring, going for 15 points, her second-highest total of the season.

Callie Genke led the Phoenix with 22 points (8-of-15 FG), while Natalie McNeal scored 18 points (7-of-14 FG) with eight rebounds.

The Phoenix opened up the game with nine unanswered points, shooting 4-of-5 from the field while holding Oakland 0-of-6 to open up the game.

Maddy Skorupski and Grim would score on back-to-back possessions out of a timeout for Oakland, trimming the deficit to 4-9 for the Golden Grizzlies.

As the game tightened, Grim would continue to keep Oakland afloat with her offense, scoring eight consecutive points as Oakland continued on  a 14-4 run to take the lead at 14-13 with two minutes left in the opening frame.

Green Bay would get a layup to go in the final seconds of the quarter, ending a four minute scoring drought for the Phoenix and giving them a 14-15 lead at the end of the first.

Oakland saw a cold shooting start to the quarter once again to begin the second, with their defense now surging. Kylie Buckley would knock down a triple to keep the game close at 18-19 just over halfway through the quarter.

On the other side, Green Bay would spring out to a 10-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 28-18, making five of their first seven shots of the quarter.

The Phoenix run would balloon to a 16-0 affair as they took an 18-35 lead going into halftime.

Oakland struggled in the second quarter, scoring just four points (1-of-9 FG).

The Golden Grizzlies only trailed by two rebounds, grabbing 14 boards in the opening half, while nailing the same amount of triples as the Phoenix (3) in the first half, but Oakland fell behind in the turnover battle with nine compared to just three by Green Bay.

Grim was the only Golden Grizzly to score in double-digits in the half with 10 points (4-of-9 FG), while McNeal scored 16 6-of-9 FG) in the first half for Green Bay.

Oakland's offense picked up a bit coming out of the half, knocking down two of their first three shots as both Smith and Skorupski knocked down shots, looking to get going as the leading scorers on the season for the squad.

The Green Bay offense continued to move the ball and find gaps in the Oakland defense for scores in the paint, not allowing the Golden Grizzlies to make up much ground as the Phoenix still led 32-53 at the end of the third quarter.

The Golden Grizzlies scored 14 points in the frame, the same as the first quarter and only four less than the Phoenix, but the deficit created in the second quarter left Oakland still trailing by double-digits.

The fourth quarter held more of the same for Oakland, as they fought hard but were unable to muster the offensive firepower in this one, going just .302 (16-of-53 FG) from the field, to best a Green Bay team that shot .483 form the floor (28-of-58 FG).

Oakland returns home for a game on the Blacktop against Robert Morris on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.
