Golden Grizzlies Comeback Falls Short to Colonials

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies comeback efforts fell just short, unable to shake a cold-shooting first half, as a stellar defensive second half wasn't enough as Robert Morris left the Blacktop with a 73-63 win.

Skorupski returned to form in this one, scoring 25 points (10-of-22 FG) while grabbing seven steals, five rebounds, and four assists. The game marked Skorupski's fifth game with 20 or more points and three or more steals this season. Macy Smith also finished with 13 points on the night.

The Colonials finished with three players in double-figures as Mya Murray and Raissa Nsabua both finished with 12 points, while Micah Odell amassed 10 points as well.

The teams mirrored each other to start the contest, sitting at a 6-6 tie as four minutes passed in the first quarter, with both teams shooting .286 (2-of-7 FG) as they searched for any offensive rhythm.

Skorupksi would get in the scoring column fast after coming off the bench for the first time this season, scoring three consecutive buckets as she worked the midrange, tying the score at 12 apiece with three minutes left in the quarter.

After a Givon and-one for the Colonials with two seconds on the clock, Baxter would receive a full court pass from Macy Smith, lining up a logo triple to beat the buzzer and keep the game tied at the end of the first quarter as the teams stayed knotted at 17.

After a tight first quarter, the Colonials gave themselves a bit of separation, starting the quarter on an 8-0 run, holding the Golden Grizzlies 0-of-5 from the field, to go up 25-17.

Oakland immediately responded, using strong defensive play and staying in the passing lanes of RMU, to score five unanswered after a Kylie Buckley and-one, as they closed the gap to 25-22.

RMU would go on another run, this time scoring seven unanswered, before five straight points, including her first triple of the game, from Smith stopped the run as Oakland trailed 27-32 with just under four minutes to play in the half.

Foul trouble would hurt Oakland in the quarter as they committed 11 fouls, leading to the Colonials scoring 10 from the line (10-of14 FT) as the Golden Grizzlies trailed 28-42 at half.

At the half, Skorupski led all Oakland players with eight points 94-of-9 FG), while Smith pitched in seven points (4-of-4 FT).

The Golden Grizzlies struggled from the floor, shooting just .303 (10-of-30 FG) from the floor, although their defensive intensity picked up as the game went on, forcing eight RMU turnovers.

For the Colonials, Raissa Nsabua led the way with eight first-half points (3-of-4 FG).

Skorupski came into the third quarter looking to get the Golden Grizzlies back within reach, asserting herself on the offensive end as she found Roberts-Adams on a pick-and-roll assist, followed by a turnaround jumper to hopefully spark some momentum for Oakland.

Smith and Buckley would score on consecutive possessions for Oakland as they pulled within 10 (37-47) with close to three minutes left in the quarter.

Despite their most efficient shooting quarter of the night, going .500 (5-of-10 FG), Oakland couldn't overcome RMU's second straight quarter with three makes from beyond the arc, as the Colonials led 58-42 going into the final quarter.

With the game on the line, the Golden Grizzlies started the fourth quarter with a blistering full court press, forcing the Colonials to work extremely hard to even cross half court.

Their defense provided an opportunity for their offense to get going as Baxter scored four quick points, helping the Golden Grizzlies hit each of their first three shots to cut the deficit back to 10 as they trailed 50-60.

With the press still causing havoc for the Colonials, Oakland would snag two steals in the backcourt, leading to a pair of Skorupski layups as Oakland trailed by less than double digits for the first time since the second quarter at 54-63 with just over four minutes remaining.

As Oakland continued to apply pressure, they continued to close the gap late, forcing seven RMU turnovers with still over a minute left as Oakland leapt out on a 7-0 run, with all points coming from Skorupski, as they trailed 61-69.

Despite the late game push, Robert Morris held onto the lead, closing out the game at the charity stripe as they shot 10-of-12 on  free throws in the final quarter.

Oakland's final quarter nearly pulled them back into the game as they shot .400 from the field (8-of-20 FG), while RMU shot .286 (2-of-7 FG).

The biggest discrepancy of the game came from the free throw line as RMU shot more than twice the free throws of Oakland, taking 34 (28-of-34 FT) to just 16(13-of-16 FT) from the Golden Grizzlies.

Oakland's defense was sensational in the second half, guiding them to force 20 turnovers by the Colonials, leading to 22 Golden Grizzly points off turnovers and 12 steals.

The Golden Grizzlies hit the floor next in Youngstown in a showdown against the Penguins on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m.
