Buckley and Royal-Davis set Career-Highs as Golden Grizzlies fall to Penguins

YOUNGSTOWN, Oh. - The Golden Grizzlies hit the road for a quick one-game stint against the Youngstown State Penguins, where another late game comeback effort came up just short for Oakland as they fell 56-73 in Youngstown.

Kylie Buckley had her best game of the season, tying a career-high with 15 points (5-of-9 FG), while swatting a pair of shots as well. Dani Grim and Macy Smith also reached double-figures, scoring 12 points each. Madison Royal-Davis also set a career-high mark, earning eight steals to go along with seven points and six rebounds in a near triple-double effort.

For the Penguins, Jewel Watkins led the way with 22 points (8-of-18 FG), while Malia Magestro pitched in 19 points (5-of-8 3FG) and five assists

Both teams got out to a fiery start offensively, both going 3-of-4 from the field. The Penguins took an advantage as all three of their opening makes came from beyond the arc (3-of-3 3FG) as they took a 9-6 lead to open.

After a quick start from Youngstown State, Oakland's defense hardened up, coming out in the full court press that they showed late in their previous game as they forced five YSU turnovers, four Oakland steals, leading to six points off turnovers.

The Golden Grizzlies would hold the Penguins to only two makes in their final eight shots, as the Penguins used a layup by Faith Burch with seven seconds left in the frame to take a 14-15 lead.

Oakland struggled to start the second quarter, starting 1-of-5 from the field, as the Penguins used transition offense to go on a 6-0 run dating back to the end of the first quarter. Back-to-back steal-and-scores from Madison Royal-Davis and Buckley helped the Golden Grizzlies pull closer, trailing just 20-21 with just over five minutes left in the half as their defense continued to fuel their scoring.

The Penguins responded with a 9-0 run behind five straight points from Watkins, taking their largest lead of the half, as they led 30-20 with two minutes remaining.

The Golden Grizzlies would go scoreless for the final five minutes as the YSU run grew to14-0, as the Penguins led 34-20 at halftime.

A slow second quarter dug a hole for Oakland, despite the fact that the teams were tied in points in the paint (16), and Oakland forced 10 YSU turnovers in the half, scoring 10 points off those turnovers.

After shooting .438 (7-of-16 FG) in the first quarter, Oakland finished the half with a .321 shooting mark (9-of-28 FG), while YSU shot .542 (13-of-24 FG) in the half.

Buckley paced all Oakland scorers with six points (2-of-2 FG) in the first half, while Royal-Davis pitched in four points (2-of-4 FG) along with three steals as she spearheaded Oakland's press.

Watkins led all scorers for YSU with 12 points (5-of-9 FG) in the opening half.

The offense of the Golden Grizzlies came alive to start the third quarter, scoring six quick points to start the half, going 3-of-5 from the field to start, already passing their total from the second quarter.

Smith would drain a transition triple, her seventh point of the quarter, as Oakland trimmed the YSU lead to just eight points, trailing 31-39.

Oakland held YSU to .294 (5-of-17 FG) in the third. The Golden Grizzlies had their highest scoring period with 15 points on .400 (4-of-10 FG) shooting, yet still trailed 35-49 heading into the final frame.

As Oakland tried to keep their offensive rhythm going to start the fourth, Lianna Baxter, Dani Grim, and Buckley all pitched in buckets as the team started 3-of-6 from the field, the Penguins seemed to match the pace of Oakland as they sparked a 7-2 run to go up 61-42.

The deficit proved too much for the Golden Grizzlies, as they dropped their third straight game.

Oakland ended the game shooting .404 (21-of-52 FG) from the floor, while also showing some chops on the defensive end, scoring 19 points off 21 YSU turnovers, including 12 steals. The Penguins offense was on fire, shooting .472 (23-of-53 FG) while draining way above their season average from beyond the arc, nailing 10 threes (10-of18 3FG).

The Golden Grizzlies get nearly a week-long break from action before returning home for the Metro Series part two, hosting Detroit Mercy on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
