Skorupski Scores Career-High as Oakland Gets Revenge on Titans in Metro Series Season Finale

ROCHESTER, Mich - The Golden Grizzlies hand the Titans their fourth consecutive loss as Oakland dominates Detroit Mercy 77-63 in the Metro Series season finale.

Maddy Skorupski bounced back in this game, scoring a career-high 38 points (12-of-19 FG), five steals, five assists, and five rebounds. Her 38 points are the most by any Horizon League player this season.

Madison Royal-Davis also had an excellent game, out-hustling the entire Titans team as she grabbed 12 rebounds, eight steals, and five points. Lianna Baxter also added 12 points (6-of-9) and four boards.

For the Titans Aaliyah McQueen led the way with 19 points (7-of-21 FG) and seven rebounds. Emaia O'Brien also notched 14 points (4-of-9 3FG). 

Oakland opened up the game with a furious pace, using an early 6-0 run, with four early points from Skorupski, to take an 8-3 lead behind two steals and a pair of blocks to start.

After five unanswered points from the Titans, Oakland would jump out to another run, this time scoring ten straight points, six straight from Lianna Baxter, while the Titans stayed scoreless over the span, giving Oakland a 18-8 lead.

The defensive intensity and hustle surged them ahead in what was one of their best quarters of the season, shooting .688 (11-of-16 FG) from the field and forcing Detroit into seven turnovers in which Oakland scored 13 points as a result of, as the Golden Grizzlies ended the opening quarter with a commanding 25-12 lead.

The second quarter started with a physical tone expected in a rivalry game as both teams relied on the defensive end to build momentum. 

The Titans started the quarter by hitting three of their first four shots, while Oakland struggled, going just 1-of-7 from the field as they still held a 28-19 lead.

Detroit would continue to have the upper hand to start the second quarter, going on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to just three points as they trailed 27-30.

Madison Royal-Davis would halt Detroit's momentum going into half as she secured her seventh steal of the first half, leading to an and-one conversion as Oakland led at halftime 36-32.

Oakland was able to weather the Titans' strong second quarter where they shot .667 (8-of-12 FG) from the field.

Oakland turned Detroit over 13 times in the first half, tallying 10 steals. Seven of those steals came from Madison-Royal Davis as she earned her second game this season with 7+ steals.

Skorupksi scored a game-high 21 points (8-of-11 FG) in the first half to go along with three steals. Baxter added eight points (4-of-6 FG) in the half, all from the paint as she helped the Golden Grizzlies outscore Detroit 24 to 14 in the paint.

For the Titans, McQueen paced the team with 13 first half points (5-of-10 FG) behind a big second quarter.

Oakland reapplied their full court pressure to start the half, forcing five Detroit turnovers in the backcourt to start the half as the Golden Grizzlies sparked a 10-0 run, finished off by back-to-back buckets from Smith as the lead grew back to double digits at 45-35.

The Golden Grizzlies would force 12 turnovers by the Titans in the quarter as Oakland led 58-42 at the end of the third.

Detroit would pull close in the final quarter, cutting the deficit to as little as 10 points, but seven clutch fourth quarter points from Grim helped Oakland stay an arms length away, securing the much-needed win.

The Golden Grizzlies forced 27 turnovers by Detroit, the most by an Oakland opponent this season. Oakland scored 34 fast break points, 39 points off turnovers, and shot an efficient .444 (28-of-63 FG) from the field en route to outscoring the Titans 44 to 28 in the paint.

The Golden Grizzlies start a two-game road trip next time out as they travel to Purdue Fort Wayne to take on the Mastodons on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
