Golden Grizzlies Come Up Clutch to Secure the Win in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Golden Grizzlies pulled off their second overtime win of the season, using clutch performances from Macy Smith and Maddy Skorupski to break a three-game losing skid and start their road trip off with a 75-72 win over Milwaukee.

Smith led Oakland to a win with a career-high 25 points (8-of-16 FG), knocking down four threes (4-of-9 FG) as she scored five of the team's nine points in overtime to secure the win.

Despite only scoring two points in the first half, Skorupski finished the game with 14 points (5-of-11 FG) and nine assists, including a game-tying three at the end of regulation. Dani Grim also had one of her premier games of the season, scoring 12 points (5-of-8 FG).

For the Panthers, Anna Lutz scored a career-high of her own, going off for 30 points (13-of-19 FG) along with nine rebounds.

Both teams saw efficient starts on the offensive end, as Oakland hit four of their first six shots and the Panthers hit four of their first seven as Lianna Baxter got a triple to go, giving Oakland an early 10-9 lead.

It would continue to be a back-and-forth for the remainder of the frame, with Oakland drilling two more threes in the final two minutes. Milwaukee's Anna Lutz would make a layup at the buzzer to finish the quarter, giving the Panthers a slim 23-19 lead going into the second quarter.

Both teams shot over .600 from the floor in the first, as the offense and shot-making controlled the game after the first ten minutes.

The Golden Grizzlies would break the trend of trading buckets, bursting into a 7-0 run, going 4-of-4 from the field, just two and a half minutes into the second quarter, as a Jazzy Dupree-Hebert hit Oakland's fourth triple of the half en route to a 30-27 lead.

After a hot start, the Golden Grizzlies would go cold, enduring an over four-minute scoreless stretch as Milwaukee regained the lead at 34-30 behind their own 7-0 run with just under three minutes left in the half.

Dani Grim would knock down a much-needed shot for Oakland to end the half, cutting into the Milwaukee lead as the Golden Grizzlies trailed 34-37 after the first 20 minutes of play.

In a close half that saw five lead changes and ten ties, there was no shortage of action.

The Golden Grizzlies shot .500 from the field (13-of-36 FG), led by eight points from Macy Smith (3-of-8 FG) and seven points each from Baxter (3-of-3 FG) and Grim (3-of-4 FG).

The ball movement from Oakland was a highlight of the half, earning 10 assists on 13 made shots. They also showed defensive spurts of intensity, swatting three Milwaukee shots and snagging four steals.

For the Panthers, Lutz saved the team from falling behind, scoring 15 first-half points (6-of-9 FG).

The Golden Grizzlies continued to light it up from beyond the arc, taking advantage of a four minute Panthers scoring drought, going on an 8-0 run as Smith knocked down her second triple to take a 42-39 lead.

The three ball continued to be there for Oakland, as they knocked down a trio of triples in the quarter (3-of-6 3FG), outscoring the Panthers 17-8 in the quarter to take a 51-45 lead with one quarter left to play.

Lutz would continue to put the Panthers on her back, capping off a 9-3 Milwaukee run as she hit a triple to tie the game at 54 apiece with seven minutes left in the final frame.

The leading duo of Smith and Skorupski would turn up the heat in response to the Lutz bucket, as Skorupski knocked down a triple, followed by four straight Smith points as the Golden Grizzlies retook the lead at 58-54.

As the game wound down the teams would continue to stay close, with both sides looking for momentum, as Skorupski knocked down a pair of free throws, tying the game at 64 each with 55 seconds left.

Peppler would hit a go-ahead shot for the Panthers, fading across the paint for a score to give Milwaukee a 64-66 lead with 22 seconds left, followed by a free throw on their next possession to take a 67-64 lead with nine seconds left.

With one more chance to knot the game, Skorupski would rise to the occasion, hitting a stepback three from the logo to tie the game at the buzzer, sending the Oakland into overtime for the second time this season.

Smith continued to roll as overtime started, knocking down her fourth triple of the game to give Oakland a 70-67 lead.

With the game tied once again, this time at 72 with 23 seconds left, Smith would score her fifth points of overtime with a go-ahead layup to give Oakland a 72-74 lead, giving Oakland enough room to take the victory.

The Golden Grizzlies knocked down 10 threes in the game (10-of-24 3FG), their second most of the season, trailing the 11 they hit against Cleary early in the season.

The Golden Grizzlies will stay in Wisconsin and gear up for a road trip finale against Green Bay on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. ET.
