2024 Baseball Recap

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies fell to the Toledo Rockets, 14-2, this afternoon on the Oakland Baseball Field.

The Golden Grizzlies (25-24, 13-11 HL) saw Reggie Bussey and Brandon Heidal record a RBI as Bussey and Carter Hain tallied the pair of Golden Grizzlies' hits.

The Rockets (24-25, 16-11 MAC) were led by both Scott Mackiewicz and Luke Walton who tallied a trio of hits, while three batters recorded a pair of RBI, Mackiewicz being one of the three.

The Rockets got things started early as it hit back-to-back home runs, followed by a RBI single, to go up four in the first. Toledo grabbed one more in the second to extend its lead, 5-0. The Golden Grizzlies nearly got on the board as it juiced the bases with two outs, but the Rockets got out of the inning unscathed to keep its five-run lead.

The game situation flipped as the Rockets loaded the bases up with one out to work with, but Gage Smith sent the batter back to the dugout to keep the teams deficit to six. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth until Oakland got on the board as the Rockets brought in a new pitcher as the Golden Grizzlies stayed patient at the plate. Reggie Bussey, John Lauinger and Brandon Nigh were all walked in-a-row, as Heidal stayed patient for the Rocket's pitchers 18th ball of 24 pitches to make it 6-1.

Toledo tacked on a pair more in the seventh with its third home run of the game and second two-run home run. The Golden Grizzlies, once again, loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but failed to get anyone across home plate, as the team trailed, 8-1, with six outs to get things going. After a lengthy rain delay, Doug Loden closed out the eighth inning with three strikeouts.

Oakland tallied one in the eighth after Sam Griffith waited out a full count and was walked, as Bussey drove him home after a deep triple towards the left field gap. The Rockets answered though in the ninth with six runs to make it 14-2.

Oakland was outhit, 13-2, as neither team committed an error. Nine separate Rockets recorded at least a hit as the Oakland pitching core accounted for 12 strikeouts. On the day, Oakland left 12 runners stranded as Toledo left 14 stranded.

The Golden Grizzlies return to the diamond Friday (May 10) for its final home league series of the regular season as it welcomes Milwaukee to the Oakland Baseball Field. First pitch for game one is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
