INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Emilia Jarvinen of Oakland women's tennis was named Horizon League Freshman of the Year, while
Isabelle Popma was named a finalist for the Women's Tennis Herb Foster Sportsmanship award, the league announced today.

Jarvinen is the third Oakland freshman to earn the Horizon League honors and the first since Liza Mladentseva earned it in 2022.

The freshman from Turku, Finland, earned the award after a stellar season on the court for the Golden Grizzlies. Competing on both the singles and doubles side, Jarvinen won eight of her 13 matches and opened up the season having won seven of eight matches, with an unfinished match in between. On the doubles end, she opened the season with a pair of wins and topped off the regular season with two wins as well.

Excluding unfinished and tied matches, Jarvinen won 15 of 25 matches she competed in on both the singles and doubles side.

Popma was named a sportsmanship finalist after she took 12 matches on the season on both the singles and doubles side.

Jarvinen, Popma and the Golden Grizzlies women's tennis team is set to face-off in the Horizon League Championships, set for this Friday (April 26) to Sunday (April 28).
