Golden Grizzlies Even Series Against Vaqueros with Win, 11-6

EDINBURG, Texas - The Golden Grizzlies got back on track and snapped its six-game losing streak as it beat the Vaqueros, 11-6, this afternoon at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

The Golden Grizzlies (4-9, 0-0 HL) got runs from six different batters as Erik Larsen led the charge with a trio of RBI off three hits for a team-high. Eight Golden Grizzlies recorded at least a hit as five players tallied at least two hits. Both Trent Rice and Ian Cleary had two RBI as Shane McAlinden picked up his first win of the season after he only let up two runs in 3.2 innings pitched.

The Vaqueros (7-6, 0-0 WAC) got hits from eight different batters as only a trio of players tallied a RBI. Martin Vazquez led the team with three hits and two RBI, as Aaron Sanchez got the loss after three earned in one inning pitched.

The Vaqueros got on the board early in the first as it tacked on a run, but Lucas Day led off with a double in the second as Brandon Heidal hit a long single which drove Day home. The lead was short lived, however, as UTRGV answered with two runs for itself to make it 3-1 after two. Still early in the game, Ian Cleary made his presence known as he smacked one out of the park, followed by a Brandon Nigh double and advancement on an error, as a sacrifice fly by Day brought Nigh home to make it a tie game.

The teams kept each other off the board after that until Orr sped to third as his hit teetered the right field line for a triple and was driven in by Cleary in the next at-bat. Once again, the lead was short lived as a leadoff home run by the Vaqueros evened things up at four after the fifth. Oakland took a lead heading into the seventh as Larsen sent Heidal across the plate, but the Vaqueros had the answer in the following inning to square things away at five apiece after seven innings of play.

It would be the last time the game was tied, however, as the Oakland bats opened up in the eighth as it tallied five runs to put itself ahead, 10-5, late. A pair of runners got on the base pads as Carter Hain drove in Day off a single, followed by a Larsen squeeze where he beat the throw to first and drove in Heidal. The Vaqueros forced its first out off a sacrifice bunt but kept on rolling as Rice sent in two as he laid one down through the middle as Larsen and Hain touched home. Rice eventually made his way around the pads to third and converted off a wild pitch to cap off the five-run eighth inning.

The Vaqueros closed the gap to four with a run in the eighth, but Erik Larsen grew the lead back to five during its last at-bat as Heidal went from second to home off a double for Oakland's final run of the evening. Brandon Decker dialed in on the mound and struck out two of the four batters faced in the bottom of the frame and thwart any comeback from the Vaqueros as Oakland held on to win, 11-6.

The Golden Grizzlies struck out 11 batters while the Vaqueros had nine, while each team had a trio of doubles along with a home run. The Golden Grizzlies picked up the only triple on the day but were outhit by the Vaqueros, 15-14. UTRGV committed one more error than Oakland with two as the Vaqueros left 13 runners stranded.

The Golden Grizzlies return to the diamond tomorrow (March 10) as it looks to take the series against the Vaqueros, with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. ET. Tomorrow's game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
