Townsend and Kampe Earn NABC All-District Recognition; Both Named Finalist for Yearly Awards

ROCHESTER, Mich. - After a standout season, senior Trey Townsend was named to the 2023-24 NABC Division I District 12 First-Team All-District team and was named a finalist for the Lou Henson National Player of the Year, as head coach Greg Kampe was named District 12 Coach of the Year. Kampe was also named a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award as well as the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award.

With Townsend's recognition, the Golden Grizzlies men's basketball team has had 13 NABC All-District selections since 2009.

Townsend earned the nod after another dominant year for the Golden Grizzlies. The Oxford, Mich., native earned Horizon League Tournament MVP and was named to the All-Tournament team after he dropped 38 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out five assists in 40 minutes of court time. He joined a short list of him and Kevin Durant (Texas, 2007) of players to score 35+ points, 10+ rebounds and play 40+ minutes in a conference championship game in the last 25 years. With five assists, he's the only player in the last 15 years to record at least 35 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in a regulation conference tournament game.

Townsend also earned Horizon League Player of the Year and became the sixth Golden Grizzly in the last 15 years to earn the award and fourth since it entered the Horizon League, joining a list of Jamal Cain, Kendrick Nunn and Kay Felder, all of whom have played in the NBA.

Townsend helped lead the Golden Grizzlies to its first outright Horizon League Regular Season Title since joining the league and second regular season title as it grabbed a share in 2017. The senior finished the regular season leading the team with 16.6 points per game as he shot at a .459 clip from the floor. Townsend played and started in all 31 games of the regular season and led Oakland off the glass with 236 total rebounds, good for 7.6 a game, and nearly eclipsed the 100-assist mark with a team-high 93 in the regular season. He also held the team lead in steals with 39 and free throws made with 136, good for a .795 clip from the charity stripe.

Townsend was to the Horizon League All-Academic team, was named Horizon League Player of the Week (Jan. 8) and named to the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List as the senior currently has eight double-doubles on the year. Currently, he holds the team lead in scoring (16.9), rebounds (7.8), assists (106), steals (45), field goals made (203) and minutes (36.0).

To date, Townsend has played and started in 127 games to date, which puts him second in the Oakland record book for most games started and is fourth overall in the books in minutes played with 4,416. In games started, Townsend is behind Johnathon Jones (2006-10), while Corey Petros (2011-15) is third in minutes played with 4516. The senior also finds himself seventh overall in offensive rebounds (279, Jalen Hayes (2013-18) is sixth with 280), fourth in defensive rebounds (585, Corey Petros (2011-15) in third with 664) and seventh in total rebounds (864, Ronald Brown (1969-73) in sixth with 866). He's also t-eighth in career double-doubles with 19 alongside John Henderson (1985-89), as Tom Eller (1990-94) is ahead with 20.

Townsend is one of 35 finalists for the Lou Henson National Player of the Year award which is presented annually to the top player in mid-major college basketball. For the complete release, click here.

Kampe, in his 40th season as the Golden Grizzlies head coach, led Oakland to its first-ever Horizon League Tournament Title as he won the Horizon League outright for the first time since joining the league. The team posted an impressive 15-5 conference record as it went on to beat the No. 8, No. 7 and No. 6 seed, all with 20+ wins, in the Horizon League Tournament for the first time at the mid-major level a team had to face a 20+ win eight, seven and six seed and win its conference tournament.

Kampe coached two all-league players in Townsend and Blake Lampman, the Horizon League Sixth-Man of the Year (Jack Gohlke) three league all-academic honorees, the Horizon League Player of the Year and tournament MVP, two players named to the Horizon League Tournament All-Tournament Team and an NABC All-District selection. Kampe has now seen a player earn first-team league honors for the 18th-straight year as only Gonzaga has a streak. Also, with Townsend earning All-District recognition, Kampe has coached 13 players who earned an All-District nod since 2009.

With an overall record of 698-536, Kampe became the longest-tenured coach at one school at the Division I level. In the top-10 for most wins by an active Division I head coach, Kampe and the team earned a win over Power-6 team Xavier earlier this season for its first Power-6 win in the past two years.

Kampe joins a list of 20 finalists for the 2024 Skip Prosser Award as it honors those who not only achieve success on the basketball court but who display moral integrity on and off it as well. For the complete release, click here.

He was also one of 20 finalists for the 2024 Hugh Durham Award which is presented annually to the top mid-major head coach in college basketball. For the complete release, click here.

Both awards will be announced in Phoenix, Ariz., during the men's Division I Basketball Championship.

Townsend, Kampe and the Oakland Golden Grizzlies are now set to face off against Kentucky in the Round of 64 of the NCAA Tournament. The game will be streamed live on CBS with tip-off set for 7:10 p.m. ET at the PPG Paints Arena.
