ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Golden Grizzlies showed out in its first pair of home games of the season as it totaled 39 runs in two games, taking down the Rochester Warriors, 20-4, Tuesday, followed by a 19-6 win over the Cleary Cougars today on the Oakland Baseball Field.
GAME ONE: GOLDEN GRIZZLIES 20, WARRIORS 4
The Golden Grizzlies (5-10, 0-0 HL) had a strong hitting day, particularly by
Sam Griffith, who picked up a game-high six RBI. Griffith also led the team in hits, tallying three on the night, and was followed closely by
Trent Rice,
Ben Clark and
Lucas Day who all picked up two for themselves.
Jack Lux also got on the board as he hit two home runs on the night.
The Warriors (8-10, 0-0 WHAC) were lead in hitting by Brendan DeFlorio who picked up a pair, and was followed by Luke Jayaraman, Jake Nuttall and Deyante Fosset, all tallying one on the evening.
The Golden Grizzlies kept a clean sheet in the first inning, while
Reggie Bussey and
Trent Rice capitalized on errors from the Warriors to pick up two runs early on. The Warriors would answer back quickly, picking up three runs in the top of the second which would then take until the fourth inning to see any more runs scored.
The Golden Grizzlies, trailing 3-2 heading into the fourth inning, would pick up a 1-2-3 inning to bring up its bats. The leadoff hitter
Ben Clark would hit a home run to equalize as Oakland went on to pick up another run, with
John Lauinger capitalizing on an error. The fifth inning also saw Oakland maintain another clean sheet where Lux would score the lone run of the inning with a home run.
The third, fourth, and fifth inning would prove to be the quiet before the storm, as Oakland would go on to score fifteen unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh inning.
Oakland kept the Warriors scoreless to open up the sixth inning before bringing home an impressive seven runs to make it 12-3 and was capped off with home runs from
Drew Gaskins and Lux. The seventh inning would follow the same story, but Oakland would bring home an even more impressive eight runs highlighted by two RBI from
Gavin Arseneau. The seventh inning would end with the score being 20-3.
The rest of the game would be quiet as the Warriors picked up one run in the eighth inning as Oakland held the Warriors scoreless in the ninth to win, 20-4.
Oakland tallied 16 hits to account for its 20 runs as the Warriors put down seven and committed three errors. The Golden Grizzlies left 11 runners on base while the Warriors left nine runs stranded. The pitching core struck out 10 batters while Rochester Christian struck out eight.
GAME TWO: OAKLAND 19, CLEARY 6
The Golden Grizzlies (6-10, 0-0 HL) were led in the win by
Harrison Griffith who batted in five runs off two hits and a home run. Eight Oakland players recorded at least a hit as six had a multi-hit evening with four batting in at least two runs.
Brandon Nigh was right behind Griffith in RBI with four off a double and a home run.
The Cougars (2-9, 0-0 WHAC) saw five players bat in at least a run as Spencer Jami led the team with two off a hit. Six Cougars tallied a hit as Robert Korta was the only player on his team with a pair.
The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a quick lead as it tacked on four runs in the bottom of the first. A pair of runs were the result of a hit by pitch and a walk, as
Brandon Heidal sent a pair home after he sped to second off a double. The Cougars answered, however, as it tacked on three in the third to cut its deficit to one.
Oakland was held scoreless in the next two frames but opened things up in the fifth as it went on to score at least a run in every inning from then on.
Carter Hain ripped a hard ball towards the pitcher as
Sam Griffith and
Trent Rice both scored, followed up by a groundout which brought Bussey across the dish. The team didn't stop there, however, as Nigh hit one far and out-of-the-park for two to finish the five-run fifth inning.
The Golden Grizzlies defense dialed in and didn't allow a run in the sixth and seventh as Oakland recorded four more runs in that span.
Harrison Griffith brought Heidal home for the sole run in the sixth, followed by a Hain solo home run to start off the scoring in the seventh. Both
Ian Cleary and Nigh crossed home after the Oakland batter was forced out but built its lead to 13-3.
Cleary started to rally in the eighth as it tallied a trio of runs to make it 13-6 as Oakland forced the three outs and proceeded on its high-scoring inning of the evening. A wild pitch gave Bussey the opportunity to race towards home, followed by a Nigh double which brought home a pair of runners. H. Griffith ended the scoring for Oakland as he knocked one towards center field for the fourth, fifth and sixth run of the inning as the Cougars had three outs left to grab 13 runs. The defense held on as it grabbed a one, two, three inning to secure the big win, 19-6.
Oakland knocked down 18 hits as Cleary tallied seven, while 12 Golden Grizzlies were left stranded on the base pads with nine Cougars left on base. Oakland led in the strikeout category as it grabbed three more strikeouts than Cleary at 10-7.
The Golden Grizzlies opens Horizon League play this weekend as it visits Northern Kentucky for a trio of games starting Friday (March 15), with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. ET.
