ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies Men's Soccer Team is just one win away from securing their fourth Horizon League Title, as they gear up for a highly-anticipated rematch against Robert Morris.
In the Horizon League Semifinal the Golden Grizzlies exacted their revenge on the Green Bay Phoenix, the team who dashed their league championship hopes in 2023. Oakland used a goal by Malik Sylvester in just the second minute of the match and a 58th minute goal by Andrew Darakdjian to dominate in a 2-0 victory.
The defense of Oakland also rose to the occasion, even without All-League First Team center back Zach Townsend, who is out for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury. Alex Flowers hauled in a season-high 11 saves in the semifinal win, the most saves in a single match by any Horizon League keeper this season.
The Golden Grizzlies are now up to a six-game winning streak, having gone without a loss in over 37 days.
Oakland looks to stay unbeaten against the Colonials, holding a 6-0-1 record all-time against Robert Morris. The teams met in a thriller in Rochester earlier this season, where after trailing 2-1 at halftime, Oakland scored a pair of unanswered goals in the second half, including a game-winner by Jayden Pinheiro in the 68th minute, to win 3-2.
The two teams have met once in the Horizon League Championship, back in the 2022 semifinals where Oakland advanced to the Title game on PKs.
The Colonials got back in the win column in their 1-0 semifinal win over Milwaukee after going winless in their final three regular season games. In their semifinal game they were lifted to victory by a Chase Gilley goal in the 64th minute, propelling them to their first ever Horizon League Championship game appearance.
Both teams will be at the top of their game, making for what is sure to be an entertaining championship match on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Oakland Soccer Field, also streamed on ESPN+.
