MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Jack Gohlke recorded his 1,000th career point and totaled a season-high 27 points as the Golden Grizzlies held on to defeat Panthers, 91-87, in double overtime this afternoon inside the UWM Panther Arena.
Â
With the win, the Golden Grizzlies (13-9, 8-3 HL) became the first Horizon League team this season to get a win in the state of Wisconsin, and also won its first double overtime game since 2020 (Oakland 92, Green Bay 88, 2/23/20).
Â
Gohlke led the way with his 27 points, a season-high, and hit eight from range, also good for a season-high.
Tuburu Naivalurua recorded a career-high in rebounds as he brought down 17, the first time a Golden Grizzly brought down 15+ rebounds since Jamal Cain (16) in 2021.
Trey Townsend recorded his fifth double-double of the season, and 16th of his career, with 21 points and 10 boards, and set a career-high in free throws made with 13.
Â
The Panthers (10-11, 5-5 HL) had four players in the double digits for points, and two with 20+ points, as Kentre Pullian led the team with 27 (10-of-13) while Faizon Fields totaled 21 points and brought down 16 boards for the double-double.
Â
Each team grabbed a bucket on its first possession before the Golden Grizzlies drained back-to-back balls from range, as
Blake Lampman got it going followed by
DQ Cole who hit from the logo.
Isaiah Jones muscled his way up to make it 10-2 quick, but Milwaukee stormed back and scored the next nine points to take the lead, 11-10.
Â
Chris Conway slammed one home to give Oakland a one-point lead, but again, the Panthers went on a 10-0 run in the next 2:26, capped by back-to-back threes, to make it 21-12. Conway put an end to the run once again, while Oakland missed its next three, but a key offensive board by Conway kicked the ball out to Gohlke who hit from range.
Â
Townsend cut the team's deficit down to five with two makes from the charity stripe, but Milwaukee added six quick points to push it back to a double-digit lead. Oakland replicated its last made three as it missed an initial shot but Townsend punched the ball back to Gohlke who was beyond the arc and made a three.
Â
The Panthers attempted to pull ahead and put its lead to 11 but another Lampman make from range kept the Golden Grizzlies alive in the half. Oakland started to roll as Jones went along the floor for a fast break dunk, while Naivalurua swatted the next shot from the Panthers away to give Oakland the ball back. Townsend then drew a foul and made both of his from the line, before Oakland got the ball back and Naivalurua drew a foul and made his two.
Â
Now with momentum and down only two, the Golden Grizzlies got another stop on the other end of the floor as Milwaukee went the final 4:15 of play without a point. Oakland had the ball on its side of the court as Gohlke hit his third three of the night to cap off the first half on a 12-0 run and head into the locker room with the lead, 38-37.
Â
Gohlke led the Golden Grizzlies in the opening 20 with his nine points, all from deep, as Townsend led the team with six rebounds. Both teams took 34 shots from the floor as the Panthers held an edge with one more make (14-of-34 FG), but the Golden Grizzlies hit one more from range (6-of-18) and added six from the charity stripe. A key factor to the opening 20 came from the glass, as Oakland came down with 27 boards, 10 offensive, while the Panthers only had 15.
Â
The Panthers quickly retook the lead on its first possession, but Oakland stormed back and scored the next seven as Naivalurua got four quick points, and Gohlke hit his fourth from deep. The Panthers eased the Golden Grizzlies lead to three, but once again, Gohlke hit from beyond the arc to put Oakland up, 48-42, with 16:35 to play.
Â
Milwaukee kept it close in the opening minutes of play and eventually cut its deficit to three points after it converted off an and-1 to make it 54-51. Oakland ended Milwaukee's quick 6-0 run as Townsend converted both from the free throw line for his 13th and 14th point of the night and the four-point lead. Lampman made one from downtown to increase the lead, but Milwaukee had an answer to keep it close.
Â
Milwaukee eventually tied things up at 60 apiece with a three with just under seven minutes to play. The Panthers took a short two-point lead as Lampman banged home a three to put Oakland up by a point. The teams traded the lead in its ensuing possessions until Milwaukee grabbed a three-point lead with 2:09 to play.
Â
As time ticked down, Oakland struggled to knot things up while the Panthers also couldn't put the game away. It wasn't until the Golden Grizzlies final possession of the second half where it got things in motion, as Gohlke missed an initial three, but Naivalurua came down with a key offensive board. The team worked it around the horn before it got back into the hands of Gohlke who hit from the logo for his 1,000th career point and a big one to tie the game up. Milwaukee had one final possession to take the game but Oakland came up with a strong defensive stop to force overtime with the score knotted at 68.
Â
The game was tied at 70 before Lampman hit one from downtown for a three-point lead, however, the Panthers added five-straight down the stretch to take a lead, 75-73. With under a minute left, the Panthers drew a foul and made the front end of the two, but missed the second as Oakland came away with the board. The ball once again went to Gohlke who drilled another three to tie things up with :36 seconds to play. Oakland came up with a stop down the floor but missed at the buzzer to take the game into double overtime, 76-76.
Â
Milwaukee won the tip and hit a three to follow, but Gohlke drew a shooting foul from deep and hit all three from the line to tie it up. Milwaukee quickly went back ahead but the lead was given to Oakland after Cole hit one from deep. The game saw two more lead changes as Oakland eventually held an 84-83 lead with 2:30 to go. Gohlke continued to shine as he extended the lead to four after his 27th point and his eighth three of the game went through.
Â
Milwaukee grabbed two points as Oakland had the ball with :54 seconds left to play in double overtime, up two. The team ran the clock out until the :31 second mark before Townsend drew a foul and made both of his free throws. The Panthers scored another quick two as Oakland inbounded the ball with ease and were fouled, as Lampman put the game to bed with two free throws. The Panthers couldn't convert on its last chance as Oakland came away with the win in double overtime, 91-87.
