Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Teddy Rydquist

Oakland nearly upsets No. 12 Michigan State, match ends in 2-2 draw

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Completing a two-match road swing, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies played the No. 12 Michigan State Spartans to a 2-2 draw on Tuesday, September 26 at the DeMartin Soccer Complex.

With this result, Oakland moves to 2-5-2 on the year, while the Spartans, a member of the Big Ten Conference (B1G), remain unbeaten at 5-0-3.

His second goal of the campaign, redshirt senior Owen Smith put the Golden Grizzlies on the scoreboard first with a blast past a diving Zac Kelly in the 20th minute.

This 1-0 margin would hold up well past halftime, as Michigan State recorded their first tally in the 72nd minute, courtesy of sophomore Jake Spadafora.

Coming off the assist from freshman Mohamed Hammoud, fellow freshman Andrew Darakdjian responded just 1:19 later to put the Golden Grizzlies back in front, 2-1.

Like Smith, this was Darakdjian's second goal of the season.

Quickly running out of time to avoid their first loss, Spartans sophomore Jonathan Stout was able to find the back of the net in the 88th minute, the match's third goal in a 16:44 span, to tie the tilt back at two.

Michigan State registered 10 shots on goal to Oakland's three, but redshirt sophomore Michael Sly Jr., who was making his second appearance and first start of the year, came up with eight saves.
