Townsend Nabs 1,000 Career Points in Overtime-Thrilling Win at IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Trey Townsend made Oakland University Men's Basketball history in a closely contested 83-77 overtime win at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum against IUPUI for the team's sixth win of the last seven.

Rocket Watts planted back-to-back three-pointers to break open the scoring for the Golden Grizzlies (8-12, 6-3 #HLMBB) with IUPUI riding a hot hand early as well to keep it close. Jalen Moore and Townsend

Brody Parker hit this first three of the 2022-23 season at 13:41 to extend Oakland's lead to five as the Jags would answer right back. The visiting black jerseys' Trey Townsend, Keaton Hervey, and Moore gave a slight edge with two to four points between them and the Jaguars.

Within the last three minutes of the first half, Blake Lampman's jumper once again lifted the lead to six before a one-point game saw the lead evaporate with 21 second remaining at 36-35.

Moore bagged a jumper in the paint just as time expired in the first half in Indianapolis to keep the three-point buffer between the Golden Grizzlies and IUPUI.

Hervey would hit four-straight points right out of the gate in the second half as the Oxford native, Townsend, began to have his scoring and rebounding wheels churning.

Townsend finished the first half with six points, pushing the pace in the scoring column in the second frame to become the 37th Golden Grizzly in program history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark in his career off a single free throw following an and-one opportunity.

What was once a seven-point edge turned into four-point deficit with 8:57 to go with Townsend and Hervey combining to regain the one-point lead off a free throw as the game's lead bounced around four a few minutes.

Two free throws by IUPUI put the game at 68-65 as time continued to tick down with the Jaguars staring at their first potential conference victory.

With time dripping down, a handoff to Moore saw the native Hoosier drain a 30-foot long ball to force overtime for the third time this season to force a fast-paced decision by the Jaguars with four seconds to go. In three of Oakland's last four overtime games dating back to last season, Moore has been the one to drain the game-tying shot.

The senior picked right up where he left off from regulation in overtime, hitting yet another three-pointer with Moore making nine of Oakland's 15 points in the extra five minute period. Townsend, Hervey, and Lampman all secured the sixth conference victory.
