Oakland Sweeps USI, Cornell on Day One of Kent State Invite

KENT, Ohio. – Oakland University Volleyball took two 3-0 sweeps of Southern Indiana and Cornell at the Kent State Invitational on Friday.

SET ONE // OAKLAND 25, USI 23
Both teams would keep things close throughout the entire frame as Oakland's Clarke Adams would spark the Golden Grizzlies to a 3-0 run at the 20-18 mark to propel the team to its first set victory of the day.

SET TWO // OAKLAND 25, USI 14
Oakland would dominate the set with the Screaming Eagles' attacking errors and Libby Gentile's efforts as the Blissfield native would finish off USI in the second set 25-14.

SET THREE // OAKLAND 25, USI 20
A 5-0 scoring run would make things 10-7 in favor of Oakland as Adams and Patti Cesarini would bookend the streak before the Golden Grizzlies would once again run away with the game behind the arms of Jessica Riedl and Cesarini.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Cesarini would lead with 10 kills, Gentile with eight
  • Madison Ross and Annabelle Tomei would account for 35 assists with 18 and 17, respectively
  • Emily Wichmann continues to be a staple on the defensive end with 19 digs
  • Oakland had six blocks to USI's three with Anika Prisby, Riedl, and Avolyn Lepo each with three

SET ONE // OAKLAND 25, CORNELL 23
The Big Red would jump out to an early 5-2 lead as the Golden Grizzlies would work out of the deficit behind Riedl's service ace would knot things up at 12 after a few attacking errors by Cornell. With things tied up at 23, Gentile would record back-to-back kills to finish things off in set one.

SET TWO // OAKLAND 25, CORNELL 17
An 8-0 scoring run would give the Golden Grizzlies a comfortable edge as Cesarini, Adams, and Rield would continue to run up kills in the stat sheet. Just as the first set, Adams would get back-to-back tallies for the win.

SET THREE // OAKLAND 25, CORNELL 18
The start of the third would be too close for comfort for Oakland as a 4-0 run would get OU to a 15-7 edge in the frame. A late 6-1 run by the Big Red would give the Golden Grizzlies a bit of a scare later in the set at the 21-18 mark before Cesarini would put a bow on the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Cesarini was the team's kill leader with 13
  • Wichmann and Tomei recorded 14 and 10 digs apiece, respectively
  • The Golden Grizzlies tallied 10 aces

The Golden Grizzlies will stay in Kent as they will play host Kent State on Saturday, September 3 at 6:00 p.m.
