HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Kent. – Kicking off their final series of the regular season, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies defeated the Northern Kentucky Norse, 6-4, on Thursday, May 19.
After setting a program record for regular season wins since moving to the NCAA Division I level in 1998 with their victory over the UIC Flames on May 15, the 2022 Golden Grizzlies further etched themselves in the school history books by picking up their 28
th win of the campaign, tying the 2000 squad for most wins in a season since that mentioned move to college baseball's top level a quarter-century ago.
Oakland's record now stands at 28-24 (17-10 Horizon League), while the Norse are 17-32 (10-16).
How it happened
Courtesy of a home run by senior second baseman
Jared Miller in the top and a groundout by fellow senior Ryan Glass, Northern Kentucky's first baseman, in the bottom, both clubs scored in the first inning.
In the second inning, both starting pitchers – graduate student
Quinton Kujawa for the Golden Grizzlies and freshman Kaden Echeman for the Norse, both right-handers – settled in and there was not another run scored until the sixth.
In this sixth frame, Oakland struck five times, with graduate student left fielder
Cam Post doubling in two and Miller driving in two more with his second home run of the game and sixth of the season.
Now hitting .320 (40-for-125), the third-best mark on the team, Miller's home run total is second-best on the club and he is fourth with 28 RBI.
Northern Kentucky began to claw back with three runs in the eighth on a double by senior shortstop Noah Fisher, a Madison Heights native, and a home run off the bat of sophomore second baseman Liam McFadden-Ackman, but sophomore right-hander
Brandon Decker shut the door in the ninth for his second save.
Kujawa earned the win, moving him to 3-1. The 6-foot-5 Murray State Racers transfer worked 5.2 innings, allowing just the lone run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Echeman took the loss for the Norse, dropping him to 2-8. He also lasted 5.2 innings, and ended up responsible for four runs (two earned) on seven hits with a trio of free passes and six strikeouts.
Nigh returns to the lineup
Sidelined for the last 18 games by a lower-body injury, slugging freshman third baseman
Brandon Nigh made his return for Oakland on Thursday, hitting fifth and finishing 1-for-4 with a walk.
Leading the Horizon League in both slugging (.619) and on-base percentage (.486), Nigh's return is a great sign for the Golden Grizzlies with postseason play right around the corner.
