SOLID DEFENSE GUIDES OAKLAND PAST WRIGHT STATE IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

DAYTON - The Oakland women's basketball team closed its regular season with a gritty 51-40 win over Wright State Saturday afternoon from the Nutter Center. 

Sophomore Lamariyee Williams led the Golden Grizzlies with 11 points on 4-9 shooting. Williams was one rebound shy of a double-double, but added three steals and two assists. 

Wright State struggled from the field, as the Golden Grizzlies held WSU to just 26-percent shooting (16-of-61) overall and 16 percent (3-of-19) from deep. 

Oakland held Wright State to just 40 points, the fewest by an opponent since December, 22 2017, defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 69-37.

The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to an early 14-4 led in the first quarter, but the Raiders answered back with a 17-2 run spanning over seven minutes to capture a 21-16 lead with 5:06 left in the opening half. Oakland closed the half with an 8-0 scoring spurt to enter halftime in front 24-21. 

After the third quarter, Oakland maintained a three-point edge, 35-32, as both teams netted 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting. The Golden Grizzlies made consecutive 3-pointers to open the final period, extending their lead to 41-32. A layup by Wright reduced WSU's deficit to 45-50, but the Raiders could not get any closer, resulting in a 51-40 loss. 

Breanne Beatty scored 10 points on 4-12 shooting, her sixth-straight game scoring double figures and 14th time on the year. Beatty also pulled down nine boards.  

Sydney Gouard was the third Golden Grizzly on the day to grab nine rebounds, her third-straight game with eight or more boards.
 
Oakland will enter the Keeps Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship as the no. 7 seed and will take on no. 10 Wright State in a rematch Tuesday, March 1 at the O'rena beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
