OAKLAND ADVANCES, DEFEATS WRIGHT STATE IN OPENING ROUND

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Lamariyee Williams recorded a double-double scoring a career-best 16 points and pulling down 10 boards to lead the Oakland women's basketball team past Wright State, 54-45 Tuesday from the O'rena in the first game of the 2022 Keeps Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship.

Oakland's win on Tuesday marks the first tournament win since the 2017-18 season, when the no. 7 Golden Grizzlies defeated no. 10 UIC, 80-56 in the first round from Little Caesars Arena.

Breanne Beatty rounded out the Golden Grizzlies' double digit scoring efforts, tallying 10 points on the night, her seventh-straight game scoring in double figures.

The Golden Grizzlies held WSU (4-23, 3-18 HL) to 50 points for the second-straight game and just the third time this season.

Despite a slow offensive night shooting 36 percent from the floor, Oakland battled on the boards pulling down 18 offensive rebounds, dominating the Raiders on the glass, 48-33.

Oakland jumped out to an early 14-9 lead, but two consecutive WSU makes tied the game at 14-all with 1:07 remaining in the first quarter. Aaliyah McQueen hit a 3-pointer to close out the first 10 minutes and give the Golden Grizzlies a 17-14 lead.

Both teams were scoreless for the first five minutes of the second quarter, but an Oakland layup at 4:15 ended the drought. The Golden Grizzlies held the lead as the quarter ended, entering halftime leading 26-21.

Oakland pushed its lead to 40-29 in the third quarter, but the Raiders closed the period on a 6-0 run. WSU opened the fourth quarter with layup to pull within one possession, 40-37, but Oakland answered with a 10-4 run to push its lead to 50-41 and ultimately take the game.

The Golden Grizzlies will travel to Youngstown State to take on the Penguins in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Tipoff is slated for 7 pm and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
