ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Kahlaijah Dean recorded a team best 13 points as the Oakland women's basketball team fell to Green Bay, 61-57 Thursday night at the O'rena.
Breanne Beatty and
C'Erra Maholmes added 10 points apiece to round out the Golden Grizzlies' double digit performers. Dean added six rebounds and tallied three assists on 5-18 from the floor. Beatty went 4-11 shooting and recorded eight boards.
The first quarter was an even battle that saw seven lead changes ending in an 11-9 Green Bay advantage after 10 minutes. Both squads struggled offensively as Oakland went 3-16 from the floor, and a combined 2-12 from beyond the arc.
The Golden Grizzlies responded in the second quarter, going an impressive 44 percent from 3-point range (4-9), and 7-17 from the the floor. A
Kendall Folley jumper just a minute into the second quarter tied the game at 11-all, starting an 8-0 run over the next 1:31. Oakland and Green Bay entered halftime deadlocked at 27-27.
It was all Green Bay right out of halftime as the Phoenix shot at a 60 percent (9-15) clip from the floor in the third quarter, leading the Golden Grizzlies by as much as 12. With just six seconds remaining in the quarter, Dean hit a triple to pull the Golden Grizzlies within eight heading into the final 10 minutes.
Sydeney Gouard dished out the perfect pass to Dean with a little under two minutes to pull Oakland within two, but that's as close as the Golden Grizzlies would get on the night.
Kayla Luchenbach went a perfect 4-4 from the line and pulled down a team-best nine boards.
Oakland looks to bounce back Saturday, Feb, 12 as the Golden Grizzlies welcome Milwaukee to the O'rena for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
