Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | David Gibson

Orange Use Late First Half Run to Pull Away from Oakland

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On Tuesday night, Oakland University Men's Basketball fell in non-conference action to Syracuse at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York 95-66.

Trey Townsend and Keaton Hervey started out by reeling the Orange (5-4, 1-0 ACC) back in out of the gate, tying things up at 4-4 with 17:33 to go in the first half. Townsend would then begin his second-highest-scoring night by going blow-for-blow with Cuse buckets as a jumper by Chris Conway saw the lead dwindle down to one at 13-12 with 13:38 remaining.

Rocket Watts' three-point jumper granted Oakland (2-9, 0-2 #HLMBB) its first lead of the game at 15-12 while the home Orange and Golden Grizzlies fought by exchanging leads over the course of three minutes with Townsend handling a lot of the action.

At the 10:26 mark, Syracuse launched out to a 7-0 scoring run for four minutes as Jalen Moore's fast break broke the drought for OU though a Keaton Hervey basket on the ensuing possession would be the last Oakland saw for the rest of the half, extending six-plus minutes of play as the Orange went into the locker room up 21 at 45-24.

Syracuse continued where they left off to start out the second half as Townsend would do the same though the Orange used a 59.4% (22-37) field goal percentage to pull way in the JMA Wireless Dome 95-66.

Townsend would go on to record a double-double in the match with 29 points and a team-high 12 rebounds with Moore registering 12 to go along with his seven assists.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • This is Townsend's third double-double of the season, second most points scored in a game by the Oxford native
  • Both teams recorded 14 fast break points, Watts tied a season-best three steals for Oakland
  • This was the fifth meeting all-time by both teams, all of which in Syracuse, with the two longest tenured head coaches in NCAA Division I basketball history with over 86 years of coaching experience on each bench

Oakland will have a 12-day break before their next contest on Sunday, December 18 at 4:00 pm in Boise, Idaho against the Broncos of Boise State on the Mountain West Conference Network.
