Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | David Gibson

The Beach Outlast Oakland in the Nassau Championship Opening Round

NASSAU, Bahamas. – On Friday, Oakland University Men's Basketball (2-4, 0-0 Horizon League) opened up the Nassau Championship with a 78-70 loss in the first round to Long Beach State.

The Beach (3-2, 0-0 Big West) would go up 6-0 out of the gate against the "home" Golden Grizzlies before a second-chance driving layup by Jalen Moore broke into the scoring drought for Oakland at the 16:55 mark. OU's shooting would come out cold, recovering as the hands of Rocket Watts and Keaton Hervey heated up in the early part of the frame.

The Golden Grizzlies entered into a 7-3 scoring run at the under-12 media timeout as Moore inbounded a run-and-gun close-side three-pointer to Blake Lampman for the Haslett native's first triple of the evening right out of the break, bringing in LBSU's lead to 16-15.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Osei Price and Lampman restricted any effort Long Beach State had of pulling away, only to make things interesting down the stretch of the first half with a 31-23 lead with 4:57 remaining. The efforts of Watts and Moore saw three-straight deep ball go through the net and keep The Beach grounded.

Right before the end of the half, Moore waited until ten seconds or so left on the shot clock before connecting with Hervey on his way up for the slam to make it a one-point game heading into the break in Nassau.

OU had recovered its field goal shooting, going 33% (13-39) from the field along with a 25% (7-23) mark from deep. The Beach forced six turnovers for Oakland while the Golden Grizzlies got their paws on four from LBSU. Lampman held a 2-6 three-point attempt mark after the first 20 minutes of play as Trey Townsend recorded eight boards.

Long Beach State would subject Oakland to a 11-0 scoring run throughout the early part of the second half, broken up by a Townsend dunk at the 9:14 mark before The Beach never looked back.

A 6-0 run once again would dash any hopes the Golden Grizzlies would have at clawing back in the opening round with Lorne Bowman II bagging a triple to get on the stat sheet with 22 seconds remaining.
