Golden Grizzlies deliver strong offensive performance, but fall to IUPUI

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Their penultimate home match of the 2022 regular season, Oakland fell to the IUPUI Jaguars, 4-2, on Saturday, October 22, in a tilt that doubled as the Golden Grizzlies' Senior Day.

Tying a season-high with the two goals Saturday, Oakland is now 3-9-3 (3-2-2 Horizon League) and in fifth place in the conference standings with 11 points.

Improving to 4-5-5 (3-1-3), IUPUI leaps up into a tie with the Detroit Mercy Titans for third place with 12 points.

Leading 3-1 after 45 minutes of play, the Jaguars registered a pair of first-half goals from junior Logan Finnegan and another from redshirt freshman Josemir Gomez. Swedish junior Lukas Hackaa added IUPUI's lone second-half tally.

Coming in the ninth minute, redshirt junior Owen Smith scored the Golden Grizzlies' first goal, his second of the year, and senior Kieran Hayes recorded the other on a penalty kick in the 55th.

Redshirt freshman Zach Townsend came within inches of giving Oakland their first three-goal match of the season and the first one of his collegiate career, hitting the crossbar with a header attempt in the second half.

The top-six teams in the 10-school men's soccer conference standings will qualify for the Horizon League Tournament, set to begin with the quarterfinals on November 6 on the campus of the higher-seeded clubs.

Mentioned above, Oakland is currently in fifth place in the conference, one point ahead of the Robert Morris Colonials in sixth and two above the Green Bay Phoenix in seventh.

If things stay the way they are currently aligned, the Golden Grizzlies would hit the road to play four-seed Detroit Mercy in a quarterfinal showdown.
