
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Hayden Nierman had everything working, striking out 10 Purdue Fort Wayne hitters over 5.0 of work in the no-decision effort but it was not enough as the Oakland fell to the Mastodons 5-4 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday.
In addition to his 10 strikeouts, Nierman gave up four runs, three earned, on six scattered hits, with no walks.
Tyler Trovinger led the way offensively for the Golden Grizzlies (8-9, 3-3 HL), going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Brenton Phillips furnished a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.
Brandon Heidal also contributed, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.
The Golden Grizzlies put runs on the scoreboard first in the second inning off an RBI single from Heidal scoring Trovinger from third base.
Oakland then held the Mastodons scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning with an RBI single off the bat of Trovinger to center field for a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Grizzlies then moved ahead 4-0 in the fourth as Phillips' two-run single brought home Heidal and
Seth Tucker.
PFW then drew even with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Purdue Fort Wayne dropped a bunt single advancing the runner to the third base, who in turn, eventually scored the walk-off winning run off a throwing error from the pitcher to first base.
